Since my medical records are private. I would be curious to see someone try and fight this in a court of law. What right do you have to my medical condition. None of your business isn't it?

Signed release will give authorities limited access to one's mental health care history

Baltimore Sun story about MSP access to mental health records.

By Jennifer Skalka Sun reporter
September 19, 2007

The Maryland State Police are requiring people who want to buy firearms to sign a release allowing authorities to check whether they have ever resided in a state mental health institution for 30 days or more.

from WashingtonPost.com (sign in required)

Md. Mental Records to Be Checked In Gun Buys

another Washington Post article on the same subject:
Checking on Gun Sales
"The rule, which came in response to the killings at Virginia Tech and took effect Aug. 1, is intended to help police determine whether someone should be prevented for mental health reasons from buying a gun. It would apply to people who have been ordered into treatment by a court or who have checked into a state psychiatric hospital for at least 30 days."

NRA is only interested in keeping itself afloat... its a governmental organization now (or it is as close to one as you get being "non-profit")

This law is a VA Tech knee-jerk reaction from politicians in MD who wish nothing more than to keep their jobs.
