I genuinely want to believe that the US can be 'saved' without having to turn my back-yard into a field of fire, and my basement into a bunker. In a civil war, there is no home to go to when it is all done. What you see is what you get. If you think people have PTSD now, recognize that the problems will be wildly magnified by the fact that there is nothing to look forward to other than victory or death. I also find myself asking if it is really that bad. When is enough, enough? Where do I draw the line? When am I willing to give up my warm bed? Are we suffering the tyranny that the founders spoke of, or would they be happy to live the wildly lavish lifestyle that most American's enjoy? When I think that the citizens of the US can fix the system from within, sometimes I feel like I am the mother of a teenage kid that knows that the kid is doing drugs but finds it easier to deny that reality than to face the complications associated with accepting it. As long as I can believe that the system can be fixed through activism and votes, then I don't have to accept the nightmare of a reality that would have to exist otherwise. On the other hand, when I feel like enough is enough and that the infringements on Liberty can no longer be tolerated, I feel like I am only seeking to justify a carnal desire for the thrill of combat and the intense rewards and losses that come along with the associated drama. I wonder if maybe I am being selfish and can't just leave well enough alone. I do recognize that things can always be better than they are. |

Okay, show of hands, how many folks figured out what this said WITHOUT any searches or translators? Actually, this is probably the most succinct and apt comment possible on the topic. The article in the OP is just so much hysteria and fear-mongering. Yes, real war is real bad. But the fact is, nobody knows what would happen if there came an actual secession or secession movement. So much would depend on the circumstances of the time. It's even possible that the US government would be so drowned in debt and political ill-will that it could not even mount an opposition to secession, and the country would break apart peacefully. It's also possible that a new party will come to power, displacing the disgraced Dems & Reps, and restoring some credibility, responsibility, and meaningful limits to the Federal government. In this case, we would have to have some sweeping changes to statutes and caselaw, and some new constitutional amendments. Then again, if there were real shooting and real war, it could look much like the quoted article. I'm rooting for an amicable divorce. Maybe even a commonwealth sort of arrangement (as in the British commonwealth after the breakup of the empire). |

Actually you are partially correct.....the two most powerful men on the planet are the POTUS and the captain of a nuclear submarine. As a side note, can you imagine the captain of a nuclear armed sub going rogue? |

The Author of this, really didn't think this through very well...he failed to mention the chain of supply being broken. Food becoming scarce. Lets face it- most Americans think food magically appears on walmarts shelves.
War-lords is what would happen. He said about there being a state of Martial Law...if the civil war was large enough- that would be a joke. If it was another nation-wide war with many factions (not just North Vs. South) it'd be like herding cats. Troops would abandon their units in a heart beat- or fail to be the aggressor against their fellow country-men. The truth is- NOBODY knows exactly what would happen. The best guess is that the shit would get runny pretty quickly. In that case (of an all out huge civil war), our biggest concern would be an outside enemy. Russia or China uses the chance to invade. A small violently positive to this whole scenario- I highly doubt that if the U.S. collapsed like that, A.The rest of the world wouldn't soon follow. B. All the peace treaties about unconventional warfare and having to use certain bullets would go out the window....I highly doubt a texan Infantryman would be worried about violating the Haight (sp) treaty by not using FMJ's |
