It was kind of silly for him to realize what he was quoting, but at the end of the day, I just don't care.

I have no faith in my rep as it is, and I don't really care if she would have memorized both the Declaration and the Constitution. She's a loyal foot soldier in Pelosi's Partisans, and consistently votes contrary to my outlook.
We need to see what he said next to put his mistake in context. I've had many an argument with Internet dopes who claim that the preamble to the Declaration gives legal sanction to ignore the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. But if he just invoked it on general principle, and not to further a legal analysis, then it would be a minor mistake in the grand scheme of things.

It's my opinion that we need to flush both parties from our government and elect CONSERVATIVES to these positions. and make it a true sacrifice to serve, at least along the lines of the sort of sacrifices our enlisted troops make everyday!

the simple fact that being elected to the legislative branch means you are set and protected for life is OBSCENE!

Meh, it's a gaff, but it illustrates the point that the minority leader is clearly not intimately familiar with the constitution. A mistake like that would be akin to someone that has been here for quite a while mistaking a clip for a magazine. He really should know better.

It does go to show that the majority of representatives, both R and D, aren't particularly interested in the documents that are designed to limit their power. (even the ones that are riding on the coattails of the tea-party movement)

Ron Paul would be about as likely to make that mistake as I would be to mistake an AK for an AR. That is the kind of person that should be in a position of power defined by the documents quoted.

All I can do is sigh audibly. We have a President that doesn't know how many States there are, let alone what any of our founding documents say, and we're going to sit here and crucify this guy for misstating which founding document he's quoting?

Mindless "gotcha" politics. Philbert is exactly right - without knowing what he said next (he may very well have corrected the mistake for all you know), it is impossible to have the proper context on which to make a determination. Given you got this from CNN, you can probably rest assured the whole thing was taken out of context, anyway.

I'm pretty sure this is one of the things that has DC ranting about this. If our own legislators don't know what is in our most important documents then how well do the people listening to them know.

Let's face it, most of the people living in this country have no idea what is written in either if those documents and just parrot what they are told by the media.
