Gotta side with the blacks on that one. I call my relatives "(dumb) Polacks," too. My Irish relatives on my Mom's side call each other "micks." The Italian wing of the family (related by marriage on my Mom's side, twice removed either way) call each other "wops." It's a double standard that's, well, standard.

There's nothing whatsoever wrong with a double standard. If you don't believe me, come on over my house, climb into bed with me and call me what my wife calls me. See what happens.

In fact this morning I had breakfast with a man in his forties with Down's, who is very high-functioning and independent. I see him on my vacation every year. He's well-loved by all present, and noted for his perfect recall of names and faces. The second time I met him, a year after the first time, I vowed never to forget who he was because I was embarrassed that he knew me on sight as well as my family and friends, and inquired specifically after each one, while I barely remembered him.

But with all due respect, the word in slang usage can refer to other than people with Down's. In just the same way, I sometimes call people "cretins" without intending any insult to people with a congenital deficiency of thyroid hormone. Sometimes I call social outcasts "lepers" without actually meaning anything about Hansen's disease. I've complained about getting "gypped" or called someone a "welsher", even though I have nothing against Gypsies or Welshmen. And I've even referred to someone as a "nazi" or a "stormtrooper" or a "jackboot," but I wasn't making light of the six million who died in the holocaust. For that matter, I sometimes call someone a "commie," but I'm not mocking the ten million kulaks, mostly Ukrainian, that Stalin killed.

So I do apologize for giving offense, but I hasten to add that no offense was intended. If we actually go looking for offensive stuff, we'll find way more than we can handle.

(It's Sunday night. Why aren't Christians everywhere outraged? Damn sun-worshipers pushing their agenda on our calendars...)
I'm not sensitive, but I do give you credit for turning the tide back on me.

I'll tell ya what...you apologized for giving offense (which was not necessary, to me at least), and since no offense was intended, at next year's breakfast, use the word retarded in your coversation, and let me know how it feels, and how it was received. Regardless of who is in attendance.

I don't know you, and you don't know me. I wonder how many other people we don't know, who are reading this right now, who may have a child, a sister, a brother or just a loved one who is 'retarded'. The word cuts like a knife, regardless of a persons intention to offend or not. It just does. There are too many 'bastardized' versions of the word for it not to.

That's all I'm saying. I'm not politically correct, I've got class.

Lol, you can't just retroactively fit some retarded example in wherever it serves to bail you out.

If I say the Yankees beat the Red Sox 5-3, and you site some example 3 years ago where they didn't, that doesn't make you right. You were challenging my example, not providing your own.

Obviously not. There's a time and place for everything. At Sunday dinner with the in-laws, I don't lick my wife's nipples either.

That makes two of us who aren't offended.

Saying you're not offended, but that you have class (and, by implication, others of us don't) seems a bit passive-aggressive to me. But I only point it out because I'm content to be called a lout, if that's your opinion, but I like everything above-board and on the table.

Since we don't know each other, I have no idea what you do or don't say--but I'd be very impressed if you never used terms like the following in other than their strict clinical meaning: crazy; nuts; psycho; insane; schizo; spaz; idiot; cretin; lunatic, loon or loonie; blind; dumb[*]; senile; senior (moment); queer.

[*] I'll never forget the outrage in my elementary school class when the teacher told us Helen Keller was blind and deaf, and I raised my hand and said, "She was also dumb."

Use of the word AS IT WAS USED HERE has is no more hurtful than the man in the moon and you know it. NO ONE here called anyone that had any form of mental of physical disability a retard ... they called a politician a retard. So give me a break with your 'class and common sense', it has nothing to do with this discussion.

Now HAD the converstation been about anyone with such a condition your argument would have credence and there is next to NO ONE here that would say or even infringe such a thing on anyone that was unlucky enough to have to deal with such a thing.

What you are attempting to insert into the converstation is the same nonsensical political correctness that has turned this country into a bunch of bleeding heart liberal whiners that just can't stand ANYTHING that makes ripples in their little pond ... well that nonsense doesn't flush around here and the sooner you learn that the better off you will be.

Palin was (and is) a 4th rank amateur in an all pro game and I don't mean that in the way that 'they' are professional politicians and she is a new comer, THAT would have been a welcome thing. No she twisted words, stuttered like an idiot when asked a real question (and let's not forget how they wouldn't let anyone talk to her for quite some time) and she outright lied at speeches more times than I can count. She was USED by McCain to fan the bullshit fires of "he's a Muslim" and "He's in league with the terrorist" etc etc etc and she did it, knowing DAMN well most of it was an outright lie. She fanned the flames SO WELL that McCain had to eat his campaign's words at the end, in public, making himself look like a fool for allowing it in the first place.

The reason McCain's people even grabbed her was plain and simple, they were trying to grab all the women that were supposedly so pissed off about Hillary getting pushed out and they were SURE a woman, ANY woman would do the trick .. well guess what they were damn well wrong. They didn't vet her for one freaking second and they ended up with the one woman that made the Hillary backing women say NO FREAKING WAY.

Had McCain picked someone like Elizabeth Dole (just to name a respected woman, republican and conservative) they might have had a case but instead they picked the worst possible female candidate out there!

And don't for one second forget how badly McCain got beaten and how many Republicans & Independents voted for Obama .... something I attribute a hell of a lot to Palin.

Nah, I didn't mean you, or anybody else here, didn't have class. I'm sorry if that's how my words came across. I didn't mean that.

This is really a battle I didn't want to get into. It bothered me that the term can be thrown around so easily, with no regard to the 'company' in the room. Just as you wouldn't lick your wife's nipples with her parents in the room, I'm sure you equally wouldn't want to offend any parent/sibling/etc. of a 'retard' in this 'room', or any other room where you have no idea who has a disability or not.

And you know what? I wasn't offended, but many of the other special needs parents in my circles would have ripped your ass off your back for those words. I'm not that sensitive.

You're quite right. But it doesn't make Palin less of an idiot. It's frightening how close they could stick to her actual words and still satirize the crap out of her. She's pretty much a self-parody. But sure, SNL certainly riffed on her to maximize the yucks.

You're completely missing the point. There is absolutely nothing significant about SNL using writers to doctor someone's quotes (or not). What IS significant is them using the "victim's" EXACT quote to make them look like a fool.

Never before in SNL history had they used someone's EXACT words to do a skit on them. Every other time in history (and even other ones of Palin's, of course) they did their usual writing, but in Fey's mockery of Palin's horrific interview, they used her EXACT same words.

I never said they NEVER changed her words, as the show is made on that premise. What I said was they HAD used her exact words, and on a comedy show....well, you do the math.
