Mithra is thought to be older than that as part of Zoroastrianism. Unfortunately, we don't really know when Zoroaster (the founder of Zoroastrianism) lived. We do know that Mithra showed simliarity to the Hindu god Mitra which could account for the 'very old god' dates...and we know that Zoroastrianism appears to have borrowed from religions from wherever it had followers. However, the death by crucifiction and similarities to Christ didn't start until the Romans adopted him in the 1st century A.D. and no written mention of him in that context actually came up until after the year 136AD, after which Christianity already had a foothold in the roman empire.

Mithraism as you're discussing, is far removed from the Mithra of Zoroastrianism. The Persian version of Mithra is vastly different than the Roman cult of Mithraism, and it could be easily argued that Mithraism borrowed from Christiantiy.

There's simply no documented proof that the Persian Mithra is the same as the Roman Mithra. Even what few ancient persian texts there are the mention Mithra do not mention ANY of the simliarities as was documented in 1st through 4th century rome.

That Chritianity came out of Mithraism is nothing more than theory, which has no real evidence to back it up.

Been a while since I read about that subject though, and as many critics of Christianity as there, all but the die-harders don't really make the Christianity is Mithraism case...most concentrate on the Gnostic texts instead because there is more evidence for them and a stronger argumetn there then there is for mitrhaism.

But none of this has anything to do with the original post. Maybe it would fit in a new thread discussing how the biggest propoent of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, RIchard Dawkins, believes in alien life forms and how they are responsible for intelligent design and the creation of man?

what the hell is up with the Jesus freaks? One of the reasons this country was formed was to escape religious persecution. Didn't the fictional character Jesus tell you that you are supposed to be tolerant of others beliefs?

Read your post.. escape what? PERSECUTION from?? what? religion... no they were puritans... bible believing christians... escaping the .....

Not all that came over were puritans, some were separatists.Separatists wanted to remove itself from the tainted English church and worship in its own independent congregations. The Church of England differed little from the Catholic Church, except for the central issue of allegiance to the pope.
I guess the Queen burning the Separatist at the stake isn't considered persecution
