Default Detroit corrupt school system to be rewarded for failure

Detroit public school systems are among the worse in the country with a 35% graduation rate, 5% or less have the skills to go on to higher education and 18 of the 19 public schools in Detroit achieved failing grades on tests ... so we are giving them 530 MILLION in American tax payers funds to fix them

An estimated 50 MILLION in school funds is unaccounted for from last year and the school is over 200 million in debt.

sounds like the Philadelphia public school system...I worked in them, so I know how shitty they can be....Usually if you want a good education in the city, you have to go to a private or catholic school and that ain't cheap.

Education is a must in America, but I don't think it's fair to reward a district with tax payers money if they continuously fail and never improve. Hell...just doing IT work for the Philly school district I was able to tell that the students didn't respect the money the district put out for their computer systems.

DC schools aren't too much better. The per student cost is $13,000/year and they are still failing. Clearly throwing money at a problem isn't going to fix it.

Contrast that with the $7,500 voucher for schools that have hugely successful students that the Senate just squashed and wonder why would they want to pay MORE per student per year for a worse outcome?

I probably don't need to give an answer, but I will: By forcing people to remain in the public school system, you make the horrendous situation everyone's problem rather than the problem of the few remaining people who don't have any other options. And, the real crime is that the failure of the education system is only symptoms of the larger problem.

If Eric Holder wants to talk about a nation of cowards, let's talk about how we're so afraid of talking about the root cause of an alarming number of problems: The breakdown of the family. That's at the heart of so very many of our problems. Crime, poverty, poor education (both in terms of schools and students), rampant drug use, erosion of civil rights, gang violence, etcetcetc. I'm not even talking about a hard Right version of "family". The family unit doesn't have to be religious to be successful, but it does need to be cohesive.

Fix the family, and you'll fix an alarming number of the problems that ail us. It's not a panacea, but it's a damn good start.

Actually there are a relatively few who recieve vauchers. The reality is that when you get the family involved in the process the child will do better. EVEN if they don't end up going to a different school. There was a chapter on education in Freakonomics and basicly what it said was that just by giving the parents the option those who pursued it (via lottery) had children that out preformed their peers.

The voucher program does some of what you are suggesting. It gets the families involved.

I think the real answer is burried in what PocketProtector says below. The teacher's union is totally opposed to the voucher program because it is clearly showing that the answer to failing schools is NOT more money it is higher quality teachers. The voucher program takes the control away from the public education system and that scares the hell out of them. If prublic education actually ends up with We the People actually wresting control of education back for the Office of Central Planning we might actually end up with more well educated citizens. And THAT my friend can NOT be allowed.

Ironically the federal gov't is a big cause for the failing of the family unit. The benefits that a person gets are vastly superior if there is only one parent in the picture. Basically if there is only one parent all your expenses will be paid in full, if there are 2 parents you get nothing and have to work for a living
