Default 'Reasonable gun control' putting a lot at stake

'Reasonable gun control' putting a lot at stake

By JIM TOMES

Thursday, October 9, 2008

I am compelled to correct notions espoused by Chuck Bauer's Community comment Monday claiming Barack Obama will protect gun rights.

Bauer writes, "Barack Obama will preserve our right to bear arms for hunting, sport shooting and home defense and respect our tradition of gun ownership."

Bauer is representative of so many gun owners in this country in the fact that they haven't the slightest idea of the intent of the Second Amendment and the purpose for which George Mason and Patrick Henry insisted that it be included in the Bill of Rights.

This country had just defeated the British Army and won American independence. That victory was due largely because of the firearms the Americans possessed.

The Founders understood the significance of having the finest firearms available for personal ownership to defend against threats, foreign or domestic.

It was not about goose or duck hunting. It was not about sportsmen and gun clubs. Nor was it even about home defense.

It was about a citizenry having firearms equivalent to that of a standing army. Not shotguns or fowlers, not even handguns. Those types of guns for private ownership are secondary benefits of the Second Amendment.

Mason, who authored the Virginia Declaration of Independence, intended for citizens to own military-style rifles for defense. He was not concerned about a threat from a long- eared rabbit or a duck or squirrel.

The danger the Second Amendment faces come from people who have no comprehension of what's at stake.

Hunters, in large, part are willing to allow gun control laws to prohibit handguns, semiautomatic rifles or any firearms that have been deemed by a present day politician as "non sporting."

Just so they don't take away their shotguns.

Obama supported a complete ban on handgun ownership in an Illinois survey dated Sept. 9, 1996. In the Illinois General Assembly, he voted against SB 2165 in 2004, which would have allowed using a gun in home defense. And it's also been reported he supported a 500 percent tax increase on ammo and guns. He's also supported gun registration and opposes license to carry.

Organizations such as The American Hunter and Shooters Association and others are wolves in sheep's clothing. They, too, support most gun control measures and are able to lure the unsuspecting hunter and sportsman into contributing money that will eventually go to elect gun control advocates such as Obama. The so-called "reasonable gun control" measures will take us all to the day when the last single-shot shotgun that grandpa owned is cut into pieces.

Seriously, anyone who thinks an Obama/Biden ticket is pro-gun is blind as hell.

Car accidents kill 40,000+ people every year in the US. Therefore if we get rid of cars 40,000 people won't die next year. That sounds reasonable, especially if you are one of the 40,000.

Smoking related diseases kill about 500,000 people every year. Getting rid of cigarettes will save alot of lives. Sounds reasonable....

Every year people drown in swimming pools. Lets get rid of pools. Sounds reasonable....

Etc....

Anything can be made to sound reasonable if you spin it fast enough.

Gun crime emulates Hollywood movies. Let's get rid of Hollywood too! LOL I wonder how quickly that would be embraced?

How many people get sprained ankles, broken bones, and torn ligaments every year running? Let's ban running to save the healthcare industry all that money.

I am tired of people getting the 2A wrong.

Actually, more like sheep in wolves' clothing... except saying that wouldn't really be fair... to sheep.

They sound like an organization ready to manfully defend hunters/shooters, when in fact they're weak-kneed frauds ready to roll-over and compromise 2a rights at first opportunity.
