Dear Friend:
Thank you for informing me of your serious concerns regarding H.R. 6257, the Assault Weapons Ban Reauthorization Act of 2008. I appreciated hearing from you on this important constitutional issue and share your concerns.
As a staunch supporter of the right of law-abiding Americans to own firearms, I have regularly supported legislation to preserve this important constitutional protection over the years. Moreover, since coming to Congress, I have opposed bills that would strip away the right to bear arms. For example, I voted against the Brady Bill in 1993 and the so-called Assault Weapons Ban in 1994. As you may know, the Assault Weapons Ban expired in September 2004.
As you may know, Congressman Mark Steven Kirk of Illinois introduced H.R. 6257 on June 12, 2008. If enacted into law, this legislation would reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban for ten years. H.R. 6257 would make it unlawful for a person to manufacture, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon, or to transfer or possess a large capacity ammunition feeding device, that were manufactured following the enactment of this legislation. Finally, this measure would require the Attorney General to study the effect of this Act and its impact on violent and drug trafficking crime.
Following its introduction, the House leadership referred H.R. 6257 to the Judiciary Committee for review. Should I have the opportunity to consider this matter during the 110th Congress, you can rest assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind. I will also continue my efforts to prevent any unnecessary infringement of our Second Amendment rights.
Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts. Please feel free to continue to write, call, or email about any issue of interest or concern to you.
Sincerely,
Paul E. Kanjorski
Member of Congress
