Default how many rounds is too much to own?

Just read this headline -

"GURNEE, Ill. -- Police seized about 550 rounds of ammunition from the home of Chicago Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson during a raid last month, according to new court documents."

I always see these big headline stating police found 200 hundred, 300 hundred, even 500 hundred rounds of LIVE ammo in a persons home and it's see as if they're a self made militia ready for the end of the world.

Now I consider myself to be fairly mild when it comes to my firearms, but I have at least 500 rounds at all times of WWB cause I buy in bulk. So if the police ever came to my home, well I'd be in the headlines too I guess.

I would imagine that 50,000 rounds would be scary, not 500.

Considering most competitors shoot about 300 rounds a week with matches and practice, I would imagine they have over a thousand. And to me that's reasonable not "Oh my God, they have over a THOUSAND ROUNDS!"

Just some thoughts...

Rob

Notice it's IL. One of the best gun ban states out there.... Just remember the article from Philly about the kid bringing a gun to school and shooting himself. They used the word "Machine Gun" Still don't know what kinda gun it was, but pretty sure it was a shotgun. Come to think of it I never got a reply from the email i sent them commenting on their use of dramatic words. I do like when they use the word LIVE with ammunition. Kinda like, no shit sherlock, it's a bullet

I have around 10,000 rounds laying around I'd have to say.

The Media tends to make a big deal over nothing. I'm not here to try to impress people with my round count. I have what I feel I should have and that's all that concerns me. You can never have too much ammunition with prices going up and up. I say buy what you can afford because it won't get any cheaper.

BTW, the dude makes millions of dollars and he "only" had 550 rounds. That is really sad.

Question Re: how many rounds is too much to own?

I've got 500 rounds of JUST .40 JHPs.

Lord knows how much .45ACP, .223, .35 Rem., .380, .40 FMJs, and 12 guage I have boxed up...

Really, is there such a thing as too much to own? That's kinda in the same ball park as "How many guns are too many?" There are some that would probably say that I have too many guns, I say while I have a few I need more in different calibers.

I don't know, how many rounds do you think would be cause of a safety hazzard?

ehhh, that's only magified because he's a celebrity of sorts, otherwise that wouldn't make any news. I have several times that in .223, in just a small purchase at a gun show, and about 500+/- each in various pistol calibers. I consider that small-time and there are thousands like me with the same number or more.

It's not abnormal, because you buy in bulk or reload, it's not like i've got a stash of 10s of thousands of rounds or anything.

I can't let this go. Rob, why is 50,000 rounds of ammo scary to you?

I consider ANY amount of ammo to be reasonable. My dad was big packrat - in heyday we had over 100,000 rounds of just 7.5 French. He bought stuff back in 60's when it was dirt cheap and just sat on it - his ammo is about 99% of what I shoot to this day.

If you can afford it - go for it!

Same here. I'm guessing that's about where my ComBloc ammunition levels off. It sounds like a lot, but it's only 50 cases. I've seen vendors at gun shows with more than this.

I don't let ammunition levels drop below 1,000 for each autoloader in case the market dries up, or it gets expensive. The present situation with 7.62x39 is a prime example. For those of you that were shooting 7.62x39 or 7.62x54R (AK, SKS, Mosin, SVT-38 or SVT-40, SVD, etc) before 1983-84 no doubt remember the $20 dollar box of 20 rounds of Norma.

I own a coupla MG's so having a huge volume of ammo is SOP. Buy it when you find it at a good price, as much as you can afford. My question (and Rob don't be offended) is that Rob posted having 50K rounds would be scary. I'm a regular, middle class hard working guy in America. For what reason would a guy like me cause Rob, or anyone else, to be scared.

Even if you use one of the Libs replies that "well, what if this or what if that happens? Surely we must take your ammo away from you beofre this or that happens". Bullshit. This is still America.

A few months ago someone started a string on this board asking "how many rounds do you guys keep at all times?". It's too late to look for the string but I think I stopped all further entries when I posted how much .223, .45, 9 MM, .22 and shotgun I keep. Then I added how much brass, bullets and primers are in the reloading room. Lotsa C3 guys keep this and much more.

The quantites were not unususl for me and in fact I was trying to stock up before the elections so the total wasn'n really accurate (too low).
