Re: Montgomery LTCF
I found some useful information in the forums regarding applying for a concealed carry permit, but did not find anything specific to my township- Lower Salford. Things were a little different here than what I read about in other townships. I was concerned along the way that something would go wrong, and my rights would be violated in one way or another, but everything actually went very smooth. As I am new to this, I just wanted to share my experiences for anyone else who may be looking for a concealed carry permit in Montgomery County especially Lower Salford Township.
1st I went to the Lower Salford police department and told them I would like a "police check" card. They handed me a piece of paper that was nothing more than permission for them to release information about me to the Sheriff. While there, they offered me a free gun lock. Total time there about 5 minutes. The lady was also very nice. I'm not sure exact hours they are open but it is something like M-F ~830-4.
I was told to wait 2 weeks and then go to the Sheriffs department, which is in the courthouse in Norristown. The local police station sent my police check card to them, so I did not have to go back, or look for it in the mail.
Due to my own schedule conflicts I waited 3 1/2 weeks. I believe hours there are about 830-330. You can go till 430 to pick up an application, but after 330 they will not process it. That’s what I heard anyway.
Once at the courthouse I parked on the street directly in front of the steps. I dropped about $1 in nickels and dimes in the meter for about an hours worth of parking. I did not need but about 20 minutes.
When in the courthouse, I followed the maze of halls and stairs to the Sheriff's Department. There are plenty of signs. Once in the area you will see cashier and other signs over a counter. The place you need is behind this. You can easily spot them because there are a few officers in the area.
I walked in during lunchtime ~12:30. There were about 4 people ahead of me. I told them I already filled out paperwork for the police check card at the local police department. This is important as they are probably going to assume that you are there to pick up the paperwork and leave since that is what happened to a couple people in front of me, and that was were about to do to me until I let them know I already took care of things at the local PD. They did already have the signed card ready and waiting for me. I never saw it though. They handed me the application that their website refers to. While I was filling it out, the officer took my name and social from the form so he could begin the background check. Meanwhile I finished filling in the various parts. It was basically the same form I filled out when I purchased my firearm.
I was a little concerned about the 2 references required because I did not want my friends knowing about the permit. They don't necessarily share the same beliefs as I do. However they did not call them, so no problem there. They are also the type to pull cruel jokes.
The wait for the background check took a few minutes. After it was complete, they sent me to the room next door where the cashier sits to pay up. I paid cash and had no problem. She gave me my receipt, and I went back to get my permit. Last item was to get my picture taken, and I was done.
Total time at courthouse -- about 20 mins. The officers there were very nice, and all had a pretty good sense of humor. What I thought in the beginning was going to be a painful experience was actually smooth, and seamless.
I think the local police part of the process varies from township to township, but of course the sheriff's part does not.
