It was 70 acres. In 1873 Governor Alonzo Cornell came in and saw no reason to train a national guard to shoot because he looked at it as the only reason there would be for a National Gaurd was to just parade in streets for show.

When George Wood Wingate argued that there was a need for marksmanship training for the citizen soldier, Cornell then said that they might as when take all their rifles away, and give them clubs because it takes no skill and funds to use a club. Then threatened to sell their rifles and use the fund towards the treasury.
There was poor economical times and New York was claimed to be an unsympathetic state. 1892 they deeded the land back to New York.
End

I'm not sure if this is the reason your looking for, or there may have been more reason, but this is very interesting stuff.

Thanks for bringing it up.

Gee, I wonder being my wife originally from Long Island, the reason she so unsympathetic. Oh I'm gonna be in trouble now, you watch.. lol

jengelh6471,
Right again, yes it was 70 acres, and yes they deeded the land to New York, but not because they wanted to. They were forced into doing it, by, guess who, the city people and politicians that had no interest in shooting sports. Goes to show ya, cant trust them city people ,

This thread is probably not the place to be having fun talking about the history of shooting as it was really about crime in the Burgs, I'll ask one last question and stop hi-jacking this tread, if you knew how many acres NRA owned you will probably know the answer.

What is on the 70 acres of prime Long Island land now, no it's not a golf course, but the city people and the politicians probably would have liked to turn it into one, you all know by now how much they like guns and shooting.

Madame71,
Don't be to hard on him, he really know his stuff.

Sorry for the tread hi-jack guys, I just got carried away with some of this stuff. We better get back to the serious stuff, like guns and crime.

Red face Re: Stroudsburg/ E-burg crime inquiry

Haha Actually I don't know the answer to that one. I looked at my wife and asked if she knows. She says yes, so I'll let her answer this one and see if she's right.

I'm sorry as well for the hi-jack guys, was a bit fun learning some of this history.

SS,
You should start a Firearms trivia thread. If your into firearms a lot it can be quite interesting to learn stuff like this.

I agree about the city people not taking any interest in the sport. But I bet if they shot a gun at the target once and hit the target and felt that feeling of joy from hitting it, they would totally think twice. I wish I had a cup of coffee and shooting right now.

Ok I done Hi-jacking. lol

SS,
Don't worry, I won't give Jengelh6471 more than he can handle... =)

Ok to answer your question of...What is on the 70 acres of prime Long Island land now, no it's not a golf course, but the city people and the politicians probably would have liked to turn it into one, you all know by now how much they like guns and shooting.

The only place I can think of is.....Our Lady of the Island shrine in Eastport.
Where Montfort Missionaries erected a 18-foot statue on a serene 70-acre site.

Now I"m just wondering if I'm right on this one..lol
I've been to that place, it was quite relaxing and peaceful.

Sorry Madame71,
He's right again.

As to being into firearms, well I've been shooting and writing about firearms for about 50 years now, long before computers and the internet. Did a lot of handgun shooting all over the US and also shot in Europe. Retired from handgun shooting in 1995, cant see very well any more and have other health issues that made me stop completive handgun shooting, started Rifle shooting in the summer of 2000 using a scope because or my eye sight.

Current job is the shooting Historian for a National magazine. If you ever need any help or advice in the firearms field I may be able to help, if nothing else I've been around a long time so I may have experienced some things your getting into. Never thought I would be talking or writing about the old days of shooting, and I guess now I'm part of the old days of shooting.

As the Historian I have a lot of Info at my disposal, especially on handguns, and a lot on rifle shooting from about 1870 to the current date.

Ok I think I have tied this tread up long enough, no more from me, by the way I don't live that far from you, maybe some day we and our wifes can get together, my wife was also a rifle and handgun shooter, shot high enough scores with handgun that she made the womans Olympic Pistol team tryouts in 1990 but never made it to the finales, damn work got in the way of having fun.

Well, I guess we killed this thread since nobody saying anything, so I'll respond to you ss since you don't have pm'ing option set.

We think that would be great to get together sometime. I would love to here some of the stories you have from the past of shooting. I'm a sucker for history when I can listen to someone about it. I had a bit of a feeling you knew more than your average Joe about Firearms History.

Also think that is a bit facinating that your wife almost made it to the olympics. Good for her! You may have sparked an interest in me I never knew I had.

Ok let's get this thread started back up for the people.

HOW ABOUT THAT CRIME IN STROUDSBURG EH?

Sorry I could not get right back to you jengelh6471, had to get an article and some pictures finished up for the next issue.

I agree, we probably killed this thread and I doubt very many members here are interested in Shooting Sports or in the history of Firearms and Shooting Sports. This was probably not the thread to even bring it up as it was originally about crime. If I can be of any help please don't hesitate to ask. If I have time I check this forum a few + times a week just to see what's going on. Stay in touch.
