I definitely understand the population explosion leading to some problems, and honestly I am sorry for that. I don't condone it or like it. All I can say is simply put I am not one of those people. Other than 1 speeding ticket 16 years ago my record with the law is spotless.
I've been around guns my whole life and was taught the most important rules of firearms safety (IE - treat every gun as though it were loaded, if its not something you want shot do not point the gun at it, ever etc.) and have always been extremely responsible. I've had a pistol permit in one capacity or another for nearly 15 years. I had to give up my carry permit because in the glorious city of NY it is practically impossible to have one and when I lived out on LI I had to surrender the permit when I sold my business. The problem here is these ridiculous requirements by the sheriff are not stopping the bad guys, they are stopping the law abiding citizens. But then again, you guys already know that :/ I'll try and figure something out I guess. Thanks all |

For anyone who's following this at all here's an update...
called the attorney General's office to ask about the requirements of Monroe county. The guy I spoke to claimed that Monroe should be willing to work with me to get my permit if I have no record and no reason why a permit should be denied, however the attorney general had nothing to do with permits. I told him that the officer in the sheriff's office I spoke to was rude and not very helpful so I am not certain how that would work. The attorney general said the recourse I would then have is to apply, get denied and then sue the sheriffs department. I called the sheriff back. Same guy. Same attitude. Same tone. I explained that currently I know no one in Monroe county but I could furnish any other references he wanted. Additionally I could provide any and all documents including a deed, drivers license, host of utility bills etc to prove I live there. He said it doesn't matter, my references must be from Monroe county. I asked him why that was the case when it is not covered in PA state law at all. He said "Because it is". I said "So the counties may put additional requirements upon applicants that are above and beyond what is required by PA law?" He said "The sheriff must conduct an investigation to determine the qualifications of an applicant." so I said "So if someone does not have references who reside within Monroe county that would make him unqualified?" His response? "Ayup, you got it." I said "Wow that's interesting. I guess we will see what happens then" His reply? "Yup..uh huh...you bet...goooood day" all dripping with sarcasm. Seriously, this amazes me. I don't exactly want to begin my tenure in the state by taking the police to court and making them an enemy. Sorry but I have heard way too many instances of law enforcement targeting people who make trouble for them. **EDIT** - A thought that occurred to me: If I can get the LTCF in another county of PA (let's say I establish residency elsewhere) and then bought my home in Monroe, would they just "transfer" it or am I back to square 1? Also wondering let's say you had a LTCF in another state and moved to Monroe county, then what happens? You have to once again give it up? I am really not trying to be a pest here. I am really just trying to find a way to make this work legally. The idea of getting a FL permit intrigues me but I am not sure how that will work. It just amazes me that the county makes this so difficult. Last edited by Mike35; September 24th, 2008 at 05:03 PM. |

I ran into the same issue, Deputy Bentzoni. I've lived here 21 months, still do not have two Monroe county references so I'm screwed. I have a Michigan CPL.

Disclaimer: IMNAL
Mike: That said, I believe that if you are a resident of one county and move to another you do not need to do anything with your LTCF until it needs to be renewed. Hypersonic, there is a OC diner tomorrow evening (fri 10/3) 7pm at Larrys BBQ on rt 209 in Brodheadsville. About 20 PAFOA members and families are coming. Come on by and make some friends! Link to thread: http://www.pafoa.org/forum/concealed...monroe-co.html Same for you Mike, come by if you can.

Ah yes! Bentzoni...same deputy I spoke to. Thanks for the refresher! Going to be interesting...
GF45, as always thanks for the info!! I actually put my offer in on a house today and it was accepted verbally. Tomorrow is contract time and with any luck 6-8 weeks from now I'll be in my new home. I looked into the development where you live but before I could really get the ball rolling my girlfriend fell for another house . It's all good cause I love the place too.I am really looking forward to getting back into the shooting sports and I am trying to get my girlfriend into it too. So far she's at least interested in trying it out which is cool. The event sounds great and if I were up there already I would totally come! With any luck I will get up there soon and can start feasting on good BBQ and getting to know some of you better. |

I've been in monroe county 19 months, been carrying with FL permit. This way overzealous sheriff can't take it away for OCing.

I will pm both of you.
Just for the record, I have written this down a few times, I wish I remembered where so I could copy it, lol...... The requirement for the local 1%(BTW it is 1.25% now) income tax is easy to meet, once you move here. You make a phone call to Berkheimer Tax Administrator (610-599-3139) , who is the local tax collector on the income tax. You tell them you are applying for a carry permit, and need a letter. They will know what you need right away. As long as you are on the tax roll you are good, if you are not, they will sign you up. Either way, they will send you a letter right out. Once you get that, take it down to the Sheriff's office with your ref's and $16 bucks, fill out the application, give them the letter and your DL, and your cash.
