This has me highly discouraged...

I have posted a few times in the threads (but read a bunch more!) that I will be moving to PA from NY within the next few months. I really love it in PA and have always wanted to get out of NY. Since I will be keeping my job in NYC I am tied to Monroe county more or less. I looked into Pike etc but the commute is just too far.

I am 35 years old and have been around firearms all my life. From my .22 rifle at 14 and taking all the safety courses because I WANTED to, to obtaining my handgun permit at 21. In NY there are a ton of hoops to jump through to make that happen. I moved to within NYC about 3 years ago and not wanting to give up my gun collection I needed to apply for a permit. It cost me hundreds of dollars and almost a year to get it. All it is good for is taking a firearm in a locked box to and from a range. Years ago I owned a business and had a carry permit in Nassau county Long Island for a short while.

I know I can have my guns in my home according to PA law, but I really would like the option of carrying. I may not do so all the time, but I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Back when I was carrying at least once Im convinced it saved my life.

When I do move finally the requirements in Monroe are ridiculous. A 1% something or other form? 2 Monroe county residents as references? Being brand new to the area this seems aimed directly at making it a hassle so people give up. I am used to this mentality from NYC. What I can't understand is why most counties seem great about it wheres Monroe is busting chops.

I did have a very generous offer from someone on these boards saying she would be a reference but since she's outside of Monroe county I have a feeling I will get a rejected application like the gent above. Where do you all shoot at? Maybe I can come down there and get to know some folks and if you see Im not a raving nut case you will consider being a reference? Please? heh

Beyond making some new friends, your only choice is to wait until you have the proper documents, or apply anyway and when you get rejected hire a lawyer. I'll go out on a limb and say you'll win. This is what needs to happen in Monroe.
You may even want to consult with a lawyer first to get your ducks in a row because you will get rejected.

Well I plan on trying to make some new friends and shooting buddies in any case. I guess what gets me is how the sheriff feels he can get away with doing things this way. Yes I can hire a lawyer but the point is it is time, money and aggravation. It kind of goes back to my argument that alot of municipalities try to make it such a pain in the butt that people do not bother to exercise their second amendment rights.

I will try to figure this all out, and I guess once I get up their I will try to figure out what tax form it is I need. I plan on paying my taxes once I move, so it shouldn't be an issue. It just takes time. It is unnerving that if I lived 20 min away in another county it could be same day service. Ah well.

Hey Mike, we got some nice houses for sale just north of you in Pike county, and the county is gun friendly.

Ironically enough I was looking at Pike county in large part because of that very reason!

I was looking in Matamoras and Milford but the bus is over 2 hours from there. Add in travel to the bus stop and I am not sure I can do it. Sort of a game of inches if you know what I mean I conceed 5 min a few times and it starts to add up!

If however you have a trick or two or some untold secret PLEASE let me know! I was up in Pike and loved it. The communities I looked in were about 20 or so minutes away from the stop though.

On a random sidenote, I have to say it's really awesome how friendly people are on these boards, and I am really looking forward to getting back into shooting again. I have a nice collection of handguns that I haven't used in a long time, mostly because I live in a fascist police state at the moment and so few people shoot its hard to find someone to go with.

Can't wait to leave...

Mike, I am not sure exactly where you can pick up the bus from, as I travel by car to Sussex county NJ.
If you stick to the southern end of Pike, for reffernece the communities of PMLE1234, or Pine Ridge you are only a few miniutees from Rt. 209, and 209 south, and a couple of back roads has you to rt. 80 in short order. There are also private homes in the area, not in communities.
PMLE 1234 is a much nicer community than Pine Ridge, in my oppinion. I live there. One of the officers that works with me lives in Pine Ridge.
Check out the web page www.PMLE1234.com
The only thing that gets humped is 209 by the big flea market in Marshall's Creek on the weekends, but if you use the side roads you can miss it heading for 80.
PM me if you would like any more info.
Good luck.

Thanks Gf45! I'll definitely keep ya posted as I look around up there. BTW I saw you used "humped" in there...Firefly fan are you?

Ken, got your email, and it sounds good! Once I get up there and all settled in I am definitely looking to do some shooting. I will need the practice, it's been too long.
