Default Deer Hunting w/ 44 Mag

I want to go hunting w/ my 6" S&W 629. i picked up some American Eagle 240 grain JHP ammo. This pushes the bullet out at 1180 fps for 740 ft-lb of energy. Is this a good cartridge for deer? I won't be shooting any further than 50 yds.

I shoot Am. Eagle 240 gr. JHP out of my Henry Big Boy lever rifle. It scored a button buck on an antlerless tag back in '06 at about 30 - 35 yards. Deer only ran about 20 yards before he dropped.

The cartridge is sufficient as long as you put it where it needs to go.

I'll probably use it to hunt bear this year since I'll be in some pretty thick laurel and hemlock.

Good luck w/ it!

ETA: Now that I think of it, the bullet punched right through without expanding all that much based on the size of the exit wound. Nothing but ribcage and lung to slow it down. I was kinda surprised by that considering I was using the hollow points.
