Default Views on baiting

I was curious to hear other people's opinions on using bait while hunting and if it should be legal?

Personally, I am of the belief that man has been using bait to hunt for thousands upon thousands of years and there is nothing wrong with it. As Uncle Tedd pointed out on one of his episodes, what's the difference between me hunting under an acorn tree or picking up the acorns and moving them to under a different tree?

It would then just be baiting right...hunting would not be applicable.

Personally, I take offense to any hunting show where they sit in a treehouse over a food plot.

"Fair chase" has different meanings to different people I guess. Some hunt for sport and some hunt for food. I don't consider it sporting to hunt over bait in most cases, but it does make things easier for people who just want the meat. Of course, that kind of makes me wonder why we don't allow big-game trapping during the regular hunting season......

No baiting for me. It stops being "hunting" and becomes "shooting".

A buddy has a hunting lease in Louisiana. He drives a 4 wheeler about .5 miles to trail junction. Walks 50 yards to a shooting house (about 6x6x6, elevated about4 feet), sits in a lawn chair, and watches the automatic feeder 80 yards away that sits in the middles of a half acre of clover. It's nice, but that ain't hunting.

no, i think it is a lame way to draw deer in... I also am not a big fan of "food plots" since it is the exact same thing as bating...

but then again so is hunting an oak grove or edge of a field...

X2. But those are the same guys who use Axe Body Spray because they think women will throw themselves at them like in the commercials.

There's a bit of a difference between hunting an area where deer feed naturally (like an apple orchard or oak grove) where you are trying to increase the probability of seeing a deer and altering the behavior of deer with molasses covered corn so that you can reasonably predict that deer will show up at that exact spot at some time between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m.

It ain't hunting.

I'm not saying that it may not be an effective population management tool. Many of the counties in SE PA allow baiting on private land for deer because the population is just too high. But, in that case, it's population control, not hunting.

YMMV. That's my take on it.

So in exchange for legalization, would you be willing to limit your hunting instruments to those used "thousands upon thousands of years" ago?
