Default Re: 30-06 ammo for hunting

For PA deer I think all you need is a good old 150 grain soft point in a mild to mid loading. No sense pounding your shoulder for extra velocity unless you shoot past 150 yards. I use a 30-06 and I use 150 grain, with a moderate load, I am very comfortable to 200 yards easy even more conditions permitting. I don't think you want over powered explosive ammo for deer with 30-06, you'll destroy meat. So that's why I would go with a mild loading 150 that's the most comfortable to shoot and worry more on shot placement. You really don't need 180 grain, you're just abusing your shoulder for no reason. Unless you hunt other larger game with the same rifle and don't want to worry about zeroing changes.

My opinion only so take what you want.

Just reloaded 50 rounds of .30-06 using Hornady 180 gr SST, new winchester factory brass, cci 200 primers, and 50.0 gr of IMR 4350. This is my first time using the Hornady SST in .30 cal but if it performs anything like the ones in 6mm do then it shouldn't be a problem. A friend shot 15 just to see if we could get an idea of shooting. Very interesting effect on our target stands. I would recommend this load for a deer hunting round.

Once again just for clearer meaning.

Brass- New Winchester .30-06 Springfield
Primer- CCI 200
Powder- IMR 4350 using 50.0 gr
Bullet- Hornady .30 cal 180 gr SST

The whole good bullet for brush is a myth. I watched a video of a guy shooting 6 different calibers through a pile of brush with a target about 5 yrds behind it. He started with a .223 and went all the way up to a .50 cal. Every single bullet tumbled severely after hitting the brush pile. I guess if a deer was right behind the brush it would work, otherwise it would be thrown way off course probably missing. I was really shocked the .50 was effected so much. In only 5 yrds the round was thrown off about 5-6in and hit sideways.

I used Rem 150 core lokt for a few years before reloading my own.

I use 150gr Nosler ballistic tips with 57.5 gr of 4350.

Cases. I use a pretty good variety of cases dependent on what is given to me by others.

I had to laugh when I was cleaning up some cases yesterday. The headstamp on 3 of my cases was "Sears".

A few years back, I reloaded some older Milsurp cases "FA 31" and "FA 36".
I shot a doe with a FA 36 and the case split about 1/4" above the rim. It didn't affect the shot and she went right down but I was still surprised.

I thought it would be OK since I download from a max of 59 grains but perhaps the brass was just too old.
