For those of you that don’t get the Pennsylvania Outdoor News. It’s a great source for keeping up with the latest Hunting and Fishing news. This months Issue, Has an article about Bullets. By Ron Spomer. He feels all the new and improved Bullets are not needed on Deer size Game , the cheaper heavier bullets do a better job. For years I have loaded with the cheaper, Hornady Inter Bond. 3030 170 Gr., or the 3006 the 180 Gr.,. And Mr. Spomer felt these are a good choice. I know one year I loaded My 270 with a higher end 130 Gr., Bullets with a high mid-range load. I hit a deer at 60 yards. And there was a Massive entry wound with little penetration. The next year. I switched back to the Hornady 150 Gr., and get a good exit wound.

Stick with what works for you and take those articles with a healthy grain of salt. Buy what you can afford, load and shoot reliably, and leave the ballistic tips and all that other artsy fartsy crap to the ESPN and Versus TV pitchmen!!!! Billy Mays here for the Handy Dandy Ballisitc tip! Ahhhh baloney!

Hornady, did you mean interBOND or interLOCK? Hornady makes both, the 'lock' is the one that's been around forever, similar to a Remington Corelokt. The 'bond' is a bonded bullet with a heavier jacket and a hefty price tag.

Poonie, I've got to disagree with you a little. The ones with the plastic tip (Nosler Ballistic Tip, Hornady SST) give better ballistic coefficients and prevent the nose from getting damaged by recoil. They also help initiate expansion at long range but may cause problems at short range They are only a little more expensive and may be worth it to some people.

For deer, I don't think the Accubonds, Barnes TSX, etc are needed unless you are pushing the limits for your cartridge, (223 for deer etc), or are running real high velocity. Cup and core bullets like the Interlock or Speer Hot Cor tend to have seperation problems above 31-3200 fps. Nosler even recommends a max velocity of 3000 for their Ballistic Tips.

But for probably 99% of the deer hunting in Pa. the old standbys work just fine.

We use the ballistic tip rounds in our 30.06s and they shoot fine, very very accurate.

For my lever gun (30.30) the new LeverEvolution rounds are awesome! MUCH more accurate then standard rounds and much less drop.

I've been using Remington Corelocks for years with my 7mm mag on deer then swich up to 140 gr balistic tip for ground hog in the summer. I love the balistic tips, the ground hogs not so much.
