Default Re: Squirrel Hunting Tips

you can always use a .22 to for squirrel hunting, no matter the WMU. As long as you follow all the rules and are the proper distance from all "things". You will be fine. From you r home in pottstown head to SGL # 43 and have a ball shooting those tree rats. I love it.

You can skin squirrels by making a horizontal cut at the base of the tail (this is the trickiest part and may take some practice to hit the right spot) then standing on the tail while pulling hind legs. The skin will turn inside out over the head and front feet. Remove front feet and head then peel remaining skin back towards hind legs over the back feet. Remove feet.

I have always gutted squirrels before skinning them, but this method might work before gutting. Also, skinning them while they are still warm will be much easier.

After all skin and extremities are removed, break pelvis with your knife and remove the business end of the intestinal tract. Then run your knife up through the rib cage and remove the rest of the inedibles (wind pipe and esophagus.)

I then usually quarter the squirrel for cooking, but I can remember a time when my mother would stuff whole squirrels. That was pretty good and I may have to try that again.

Good luck and good hunting!
