I used to hunt groundhogs a lot when I lived in Lancaster county. I just drove around the farms and knocked on doors and asked if I could shoot them. Most farmers were more than happy to let me have at it and several wanted them completely eradicated. I only went once last year.

Right now my groundhog gun is a Rem. 700 in .243. It shoots flat but it's LOUD. If there are a lot of them out in the field when I take my first shot, they'll head for their holes and stay down for up to an hour.

If I ever get back into it again, I'm thinking of picking up another rifle in .223 or another caliber that's quieter. I'll take both to the fields and save the .243 for the longer shots.

It has replaced fishing as my favorite summer activity. Good day for a walk, fire a few rounds, smoke a hog.

Best regards,
chalmitch

I love the 'Hogs!!! I get anywhere from 8-12 a year typically just around my place. I usually use a 17 HMR (the 17gr ballistic tips) but have taken them with 22 revolvers and my "grass cutting gun" a 1911. Groundhog holes don't mix well with horses. I also have two (legal for chucks) .223s and a 22-250 and a 243 to use for longer shots, though I haven't had the need yet.

I use a Savage 243 loaded with Hornady 75gr Vmax bullets. It is devastating on GH. I cannot wait for this upcoming season.

First, let me thank you for your service. It's because of guys like you that guys like the rest of us can enjoy the life we have here in America.

Secondly, do you have the same problem with the noise of your .22-250 as I do with my .243?
