I hope this is the rifle that I'm thinking of and you get this fixed soon. Can't wait to see some pictures.

If I'm right ... How do you like the finish and how did the wood turn out?

Yes it is. The refinish took a while, but is AMAZING. My friend's dad also did an awesome job on the woods too. I have photos from the beginning to the end to share. I can't wait to show it off, but will have to until I get this final piece in. It's ridiculous I know.

If you feel like visiting Quakertown, I'd be happy to take a shot at it. I have a bench vise, various wrenches, and I've re-assembled such parts before. Maybe you just need a fresh pair of hands on it.

Thanks for the offer Phil, I really appreciate it. I'll see if I can find someone local first. Thanks again.

Aw, c'mon, everyone should visit Quakertown and see all the magnificent....well, there's a home where the Liberty Bell spent one night. Has a nice plaque. And there's the Walmart...though that's actually in Richland Borough, so...hmmm. We have wild ducks. Or we used to.

Hahahahah...I must, I must make it out there one of these days. Quite a few friends on here are out that way.

Default Re: AK upper handguard reassembly help?

Al,

I recently completed an AK build and I had the same problem when trying to replace the original upper handguard wood with a Tapco replacement part. Turns out, at least for me, that the ends of the gas tube are fixed and do not rotate. The only part that rotates is the wood itself.

So I had to rotate the wood 180 degrees to remove it, then put the Tapco replacement in facing the bottom of the gas tube, and rotate it 180 degrees to get it into the proper orientation.

I found this video that shows the procedure - http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...5223804247737#

I hope this helps.

Gary

Thanks for the reply Gary. It does rotate for me because I did it to take the wood off prior to sending it in for refinishing. I've contacted the place that did the refinishing to see if they are able to help since I feel like I'm going to damage it upon a few further attempts.

Holy crap, I've completely misread your posts. The wood is supposed to rotate around the axis of the tube, the tube isn't supposed to be alterable.

Seriously, if you don't want to visit Quakertown, find a pair of hands SOMEWHERE that have done this before, it only takes a minute if you know exactly what you're doing.

Oh craps, seriously??? Why the heck did I think I rotated the damn thing originally? Alright, time to do some serious introspection.
