    Default Basic Gunsmith Set

Looking to get some basic tools to work on guns for Christmas. Any suggestions on a kit or items I should be sure are in there? I was thinking gun screw drivers, brass hammer, etc. Maybe something like this?

good screwdriver set, multisize punch set, small hammer with replaceable plastic and rubber heads. and my all time favorites a light source and magnifying glasses that can be used hands free. reference manuals with schematics is handy as well.

As far as screw drivers I recommend these. They're out of stock right now but, they should have them back soon. All of the tips are lifetime warranty and my experiences with their customer service has never been anything short of great.

I use the Magna tip set. It is worth it's weight in gold when working on other people's guns.

If you hand a gun back to someone after you have ass raped the screws with ill fitting screwdrivers, you will suffer; horribly.

There was a "gunsmith" in our town back in the 60's, had a shop on a main highway so drew in business. Great rust-bluer. Screw slots? He called one irate customer too damned fussy when he buggered a couple of threads!
His business was short-lived, for that and additional reasons.

I like the Magna Tip set too. Amazes me how many flipping sizes of regular flat tip screw heads you will encounter doing even basic work.

I would also consider a dremel tool. Obviously for metal working I wouldn't use it for anything fine, but you may find it handy for rough cuts that you intend to clean up, polishing jobs, etc. I have found mine most handy for undoing other's work, such as welds or giving messed up screw heads a way to be removed.
