Refinishing a 1911
I am starting to refinish a 1911 and need to know what type of media they use on Colt to produce the matte finish on top of the slide and frame curves... Thx

Re: Refinishing a 1911
Thx...Will post some pics...I fitted a wilson high ride beaver tail safety and blended the rear of the slide with the frame leading to the BT safety. Contoured the BT and sides of the frame so they lined up. Removed the grip bushings and plunger tube to do the flats of the frame. You would not believe how many high and low spots are on the frame sides. Spent some time flattening out the sides on a milled steel block and plan to finish with a 150 grit on all the flats. 150 grit gives the stainless a satin finish close to stock, can't really do that until I figure out what type of blasting media needed for all the round surfaces though

Some day I will learn how to do that stuff. I hope Pennsylvania Gunsmith School is still around when I retire.

Better apply a couple years ahead, I believe they have a waiting list several years long

Glass beads will give you a matte finish...something more abrasive such as sand or aluminum oxide if you are looking to rough up the service to say Cerakote or KG Gunkote.

Re: Refinishing a 1911
It's not just the blasting media but the air pressure also.
