my mosin, over the years, has gotten more and more rusted on the bolt handle almost covering the numbers on it, im not sure what will get it shined back up to looking new, would steel wool and some solvent do the trick or at least help?

Re: rusty mosin bolt
Very fine steel wool should work. If it was any other rifle I'd recommend having a machinist polish it but you'd end up spending more than the rifle is worth.
If you have a RotoZip (or similar rotary tool) they make wire brass wheels that will take the rust off. If you use the steel brush wheels be careful as it eats through metal pretty quick. Follow the brass brush wheel up with a polishing wheel and polishing compound.
This process works well with a light touch, a vise, and a little practice. Practice on an old hand or garden tool first. An electric drill will also work and the wire and polishing discs can be found at most hardware stores.
Good luck.

Re: rusty mosin bolt
I doubt it was as bad as one of mine.
I usually use a bronze/brass brush and CLP but this took more so I used a wire brush on a bench grinder and carefully removed the rust but not polish out the patina.
Do you have numbers on the bolt body or bolt knob? If they are on the knob then its a Finn/Finn capture mosin.

Re: rusty mosin bolt
Oil bath in an ultrasonic cleaner if you have access to one.
If not, a generous amount oil Hoppes and 0000 steel wool since the bolt is not a blued part.
Follow with CLP of your choice.

Re: rusty mosin bolt
I tried Naval Jelly on a Chinese T-53 I just bought. The Bolt Body and Bolt Connector were completely covered and two applications of naval jelly and some steel wool made it look a lot better.
I used to use Birch Wood Casey rust remover for my rust/blue removing but for the same price you get much more Naval Jelly. Plus Naval Jelly is available at Lowes.Last edited by RebelRaider5; August 14th, 2014 at 08:11 PM.

Elbow grease and some steel wool should make do with it.
Once you have it to your liking you should send it to Max_Shepherd and have him coat it for you. He has like three coatings one being to mimic the original. You couldn't tell the differnce.

Re: rusty mosin bolt
This is why I have a strict regimen of inspecting/cleaning/oiling my firearms every few months.
I had a suprise or two over the years due to poor storage, never again.
Once you get them cleaned up, I have had good luck with the Birchwood Casey "Barricade" rust preventative. It is a light oil (odd smell) but I apply pretty wet, wipe down before putting them away.
Nothing wrong with wax either, I have waxed wood and metal on rifles also, Johnsons Paste Wax is good stuff."Disperse you Rebels! Damn you! Throw down your Arms and Disperse!" British Major Pitcairn at Lexington April 19, 1775
