Is that just strapped on? Can you still use it during the late season in Pa. like that?

PA flintlock season proper is open sights only with hi-vis type/fibers permitted as far as I know. While I do think some old school brass tube scopes of quasi period correctness should be allowed, as far as I recall from past years no optical sights are permitted for the flintlock season to hunt.

Its a magnetic mount that uses tension to hold it on. You just tighten three screws on the side and it grips the sides of the octagon barrel. The strap is just for safety.

How the recoil on that thing? I've never fired a muzzle loader, flint, perc. before.

Depends on the amount of power you use and the type of ammo. Round ball I use 70 grain and for sabots and maxi balls I use 90. I didn't hold the gun right a couple times and ended up with a baseball sized bruise on my shoulder for a few days. Recoil is a little more with the shaped ammo than the round balls. Its about the same as shooting a 12 gauge IMO.
