Max384, I have a 500 and a 460. If you've shot a S&W model 29 or 629, 44 magnum it's about the same, maybe less recoil. They are loud, use some hearing protection, but the recoil ain't that bad. All the hype about the recoil in the gun magazines is just sales tactics. The only problem with them is the cost of amunition. Everytime you pull the trigger is $2.50. That will make you jerk if you're not careful. And you mentiioned the finish, I bought both of mine brand new and the finish looks like it was done with a steel brush. Scratches in the finish on both of them and they were new. And both of mine had gun powder residue in the barrels when I bought them. I called Smith & Wesson complaining about the dealer I bought them from for supposedly selling me a new gun and it had been fired and the barrel had gun powder residue in it. They told me that they test fired every gun before it left the factory and they didn't clean the barrel. So that's why the residue. But you will like the 500 if you can afford to shoot it much.
The recoil sounds very manageable if it's less than a Smith 44 mag especially with the soft rubber grips it comes with. Thanks for the info.

Fortunately for me, I reload my own ammo. So the price per trigger pull isn't too bad. Right now it costs me 39 cents per round (34 cents per round for reduced loads), not including the price of brass since I can continually reload that. Once I shop around for the best prices on components, I'm hoping to have that price down to around 30 cents a round. I bought whatever they had on hand at the gun shop so I didn't have to buy preloaded ammo.

Unfortunately, the scratches on mine are definitely from scrubbing. They're especially noticeable around the engravings. I have two other stainless smiths and these scratches aren't from the factory. You have to look close to see them though. It doesn't bother me too much.

leave it be. it's a run of the mill model 10. nothing special about it, shoot it the way it is. look for a better looking piece with the money you don't spend on this one.

I kind of agree but I am thinking on something like Gunkote or similar product. I may just leave it as is. I have to give that some thought. I do like the way you think about getting an additional one.

my newest addition is a 629 performance center .44 magnum hunter. the barrel is as long as it's name at 7 1/2" plus 1 1/2" compensator. i would love to be able to take it off and put it back on but i think it isn't removable. i haven't shot it yet but hopefully this week. enjoy:

your welcomed to try her out ref, i am off this thursday and looking for an outdoor range, or atleast a 25 yard range if someone wants to guest me in. i didn't rejoin my local range because their ammo prices are absolutely insane and i haven't been shooting much lately anyway.

Thanks!
I haven't been shooting in a while myself. Thanks for the invite but I have to work on Thursday. I hear you about the prices of ammo. I've got a few rounds in stock, but I always hate seeing the pile get lower after I go shooting.
