Newly purchased $211 out the door with holster....now for the big question refinish it or leave as is. I have been watching for a heavy 4" barrel model 10 for some time now. I know its kind of an ugly duckling but I thought the price was right. What do you guys think?

I would get the Robar Roguard black satin finish outside and NP3 the internals. But that is just me...

That would be sweet but IMO would be a little overboard for this one. I am thinking of one of the do it yourself kind of product like Brownell sells. Until I send it out to have it done I would have been able to pick a mint one up somewhere for the same kind of money invested.

By the way I shot it yesterday and it is a keeper. DA pull is stiff but SA works fine. I think with a rubber grip and a budget refinish I will have a decent shooter.

Here is one I don't think I've ever shown. Another member of the family. We've had her since '90 or '91

S&W Model 586-3 in .357 Trim. 6in Barrel and an Oh-so-sweet trigger job.

Here's a picture of my latest acquisition, A S&W 500. The little lead cast bullet in the picture is a .38 SPL for comparison. I haven't gotten to shoot it yet, but I don't imagine it's gonna be pleasant. I loaded 10 rounds to a mid-range powder level and I did 10 reduced loads (in case I get a case of vaginitis on the range ).

It was $900 OTD used. I don't think whoever owned it before me shot it much because the only way I could tell it was used was some scuffing on the finish (looks like someone was a little overzealous with a steel bristle brush). I had been looking at getting one for a long time now, but I kept buying other guns first too.

Thanks max, at that price it's definately down the road for me. Sure is a nice looking gun. I'll get one someday!

Max384, I have a 500 and a 460. If you've shot a S&W model 29 or 629, 44 magnum it's about the same, maybe less recoil. They are loud, use some hearing protection, but the recoil ain't that bad. All the hype about the recoil in the gun magazines is just sales tactics. The only problem with them is the cost of amunition. Everytime you pull the trigger is $2.50. That will make you jerk if you're not careful. And you mentiioned the finish, I bought both of mine brand new and the finish looks like it was done with a steel brush. Scratches in the finish on both of them and they were new. And both of mine had gun powder residue in the barrels when I bought them. I called Smith & Wesson complaining about the dealer I bought them from for supposedly selling me a new gun and it had been fired and the barrel had gun powder residue in it. They told me that they test fired every gun before it left the factory and they didn't clean the barrel. So that's why the residue. But you will like the 500 if you can afford to shoot it much.
