Default Old Porn

I love tax time....

The top one is a Springfield model 1783 Trapdoor, made in 1878.
The second (for thoes who don't know) is a Springfield model 1903 made in 1907.

Cant wait to see how they do at the range.

Nice Trapdoor.

We have a '78 out at the farm that I used to deer and groundhog hunt with for years.

Just remember - only use <28K psi or blackpowder with that thing. (if you didn't already know)

not sure how i missed this one but any how, that '03 is very questionible on how safe it is to shoot.
in a nut shell, there were issues with the way the receivers were made. the low serial number receivers, as they are known, are generally thought to be not safe.

To be sure of what exactly constitutes a low numbered receiver, go to surplusrifle.com and PM a moderator there named RickTheLibrarian. He is a 1903/A3 guru. He'll have the info, and sources to back it up.

Is the serial number under 800,000 (Springfield mfg) or 285,507 (Rock Island mfg)or so?

Quote:
At Springfield Armory the worst three years for receiver failure were 1904-1907 with 1905 being an exception. Receivers made in these four years account for nearly 45.5 % (15/33) of all the receivers that failed. The absence of failed receiver among those produced in 1908-10, 1912 and 1915 suggests that the problem was not caused by hastily trained war time workers unfamiliar with rifle manufacturing requirements.
