I'm surprised that this gadget isn't an ATF-restricted weapon, requiring tax stamps and the like. Pleasantly surprised, but surprised.

It's because it has to be folded to fire and apparently thats gun looking enough for them. I too was surprised so I looked it up a few months back when I first saw one of these.

It meets the definition of a pistol when it's folded and has to be folded to fire.

I'd like to build myself one eventually.

TO MY UNDERSTANDING (which may or may not be correct) the atf had origionaly approved thi design a while back, quite a few were produced, and then they changed their minds on their ruling and determined that they were an aow, but the ones already produced were grandfathered, so you could buy a legaly grandfathered one as a pistol, but any new production guns like this would require the tax stamp.

does anyone know this FOR CERTAIN????

i would love to be wrong on this, as it would be a very neat project to do, and cheap too!! but i dont want to do anything to jeapordise my freedom!!

if this does not reqiure an aow stamp, im pretty sure ill have one on my "to do " list!!(in .22lr)

I belive you are incorrect. I haven't heard anything about them being reclassified. A quick search showed they were producing them at least untill 2003.

This is the last thing I've seen published about the Stinger Pen Gun:

"The following commentary was sent to ATF in response to a notice of proposed rule making (NPRM). The lettter sets forth the NFATCA's view on a serious issue: the possible amendment to the definition of the NFA's "any other weapon" category regarding the meaning of the term "pistol." "Any other weapon" is defined by statute in 26 U.S.C. 5845(e) to include any other weapon or device capable of being concealed on the person from which a shot can be discharged through the energy of an explosive. The definition excludes a "pistol" having a rifled bore. The proposed regulation redefines "pistol" to "regulate certain weapons that pose significant public safety and security risks in this post 9/11 era." A weapon or device having a rifled bore that meets the definition of "pistol" would be excluded from the "any other weapon" category, while those not meeting the definition would be treated as "any other weapon" fully subject to NFA registration and regulation. The target of the NPRM appears to be the Stinger pen pistol. However, in my opinion, the potential for this definiton to affect handgun ownership more broadly, as interpreted by a future hostile Administration, should be a real concern for all gun owners."

This came from an article in the "Legal Side" section of the September 2005 issue of Small Arms Review, written by Mark Barnes.

Oh and I did shot mine at work in a roof top mechanical room downtown into a huge bundle of air filters, everybody else wanted shoot it next but I thought it was not a good idea. Good thing we stopped because our guards were on the radios talking a loud noise

I did use bird shot though.

Hi. New to this forum, just found it.

I found a Braverman Stinger in .22LR at a local shop about a decade ago, NIB for $125. At the same store, I found a .22 magnum barrel for it, which I now kick myself for not grabbing.

It is definitely a weapon of last defense. To be used when your attacker has his hands around your throat, you pull out the Stinger, pop it open and shove it up your attackers' nose. Let the .22 bounce around inside his skull a bit.

You definitely cannot aim it. It does, however, do very nicley if you use the 'shoot from the hip' finger-point method. I found that I can hit a standard sheet of paper at 7 yards every time.

It is not ATF restricted because it has to be 'opened' 80 degrees to be fired.
