not quite true - it silences the bang, but there's a sonic crack which is not nearly as loud as the original bang and it's further down range rather than right at the muzzle. works great for military applications because it makes it much harder to pinpoint the location of the shooter. 9mm is easy to silence because if you get a heavy bullet, it usually flies right below the speed of sound depending on the temperature of the air around it......the colder it is, the slower the bullet must fly to be subsonic........22 is easy to find subsonic ammo for and some silencers (the kind with "wipers") actually slow down the speed of the bullet.

at least that's what i've learned - anyone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.....

I agree with punisher. Plus the .22 will not go super sonic with such a short bbl so you don't even need to buy subsonic. Plus it's really not that much work to get one. I took me about 20 minutes to get my picture, finger prints and sign off...

.22's will be subsonic out of a pistol, but not out of a rifle. they go supersonic out of 16"bbl AR. www.bloomautomatic.com/tac65.wmv

Suppressors with wipes would decrease the velocity, but I don't think there are any suppressors on the market with wipes these days. ATF changed the rules (c. 1981 I think) to say that any suppressor part is a suppressor, so you can't just buy a bag of replacement baffles. Pretty much everything now is baffled.
