not quite true - it silences the bang, but there's a sonic crack which is not nearly as loud as the original bang and it's further down range rather than right at the muzzle. works great for military applications because it makes it much harder to pinpoint the location of the shooter. 9mm is easy to silence because if you get a heavy bullet, it usually flies right below the speed of sound depending on the temperature of the air around it......the colder it is, the slower the bullet must fly to be subsonic........22 is easy to find subsonic ammo for and some silencers (the kind with "wipers") actually slow down the speed of the bullet.
at least that's what i've learned - anyone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.....
