And if you see a Yugo M70AB2 underfolder - strongly consider buying it IMMEDIATELY. It will not be there when you walk past the table later. Witnessed that first hand last Sat at Washington PA show.

The Yugo underfolder AKs have been disappearing quickly accross the USA as you get a great AKM for the $500.00-$600.00 that you would have paid for one a month ago.

Another super well-made and still sub-$500.00 AKM, is the often overlooked Hungarian AMD AKM from Century.

EDIT: To add some caveat emptors to the following AMD suggestion...

If you already have your AK and simply want a different AK to add to the collection, then consider the unusual AMD.
Else, be advised of several things that explain why the AMD is "often overlooked" and not the best choice for your only AKM;

The AMD muzzle break makes it VERY LOUD - and thus uncomfortable to shoot for any length of time.

The AMD was made for special a purpose; a compact weapon for use by dismounted armor crewmen and other non-infantry types. It wasn't meant for sustained infantry combat - thus the issue 20rd mags and NON-STANDARD AK furniture.

Make sure you use a glove for the off-hand, because that NON-STANDARD AK verticle
forgrip means 3rd degree burns if your hand slips off.

Like the Yugo's that have now pretty much vanished, Century takes imported parts kits of the superbly-made Hungarian AMD AKM and subcontracts them out to an AK builder who:
Refinishes the parts, adds the 922 US parts content including the top-shelf TapcoG2 FCG, DCI/NoDakSpud recvr, and Green Mtn barrel, and permanently adds a mofo muzzle break for US legal length...

Viola; a legal Hungarian side-folder AMD AKM.

Like the Yugos, your'e getting a boutique-built AK for mass-market prices.
And like the Yugos; once the AMD parts kits dry up, no more affordable AMDs like we had with the Yugos.

How true that is. I just picked up number 6 the other day.

Currently, the best deal you can get for an AK is a Saiga, and then do the conversion yourself or have it done for you. Otherwise, a Yugo is an excellent rifle.

A FA ak will cost you about 12K - 15K ... I believe. I haven't really price checked them that much because that's way out of my price range. I think Impact Guns had them for about that price.

god damn that sneaky guy doing the 1986 sneak in of the awb ban... I don't feel like taking out a loan for an ak-47 full auto.... how is that supposed to protect people? Isn't it true that a crime has never been commited with an nfa registered weapon?

I know ... I wish that I could buy a FA ak. Although, with prices for ammo creeping up, you would need to add a few extra thousand dollars to feed that beast.

The cheapest FA firearm (I believe) is an mac10 for about 4K.

Back to the question at hand ....

Find a list of local gun shops and call around asking what kind of AKs they have and the prices, then go to the gun show. You will have a pretty good feel if the prices are good or not.

Ace Sporting Goods in Washington had a Yugo UF for $499, I couldn't find one that cheap at the Washington Gun show. The cheapest one that I saw was about $550.

Talking Re: AK-47

The WASR is a decent entry level AK, depending on how much you have to spend. A gun show is probably your best bet on ammo prices right now. And all the magazines you will need will be there, too. Hell, get the sling and bayonet, and you are covered for any eventuality.
