Way to check for Stolen Firearms?

Does anyone know of a website where people post serial numbers of stolen firearms so that people could check before they buy a gun?

no site exists, there was a place called isthisgunstolen.com years ago, but its been down a long time.

really no way to check unless you have a cop buddy who can run it.

AR15.com just started a forum in their Equipment Exchange for stolen guns and info. It's not much, but its a start.

That's actually one of my pet peeves, that you can be charged for being in possession of stolen property, but there's no objective way for you to determine whether it's stolen or not.

If you get a great deal on a long gun at a yard sale or flea market, you run the risk that your great deal should have alerted you that it was likely stolen (which is another reason for you to shut up when the police ask you about possible crimes they think you committed, the seemingly innocent statement "hey, a guy was offering the Mini-14 for $100, of course I bought it, I could sell it the next day for 3 times that" can subject you to possible liability for "having reason to know it was stolen" as well as ATF interest in your intent to buy & sell guns without an FFL. So shut up, please.)

I'd be pleased to have a resource where we could do our due diligence on our used gun purchases. I don't see much of a downside, even if crooks checked it first to see if their stolen gun had been reported yet, it doesn't give them any advantage over innocent purchasers that they don't have now.

We've asked the Montgomery Twp. (MontCo) police to check SN's for us and they have. First time they came out to us and were friendly as can be. Second time I stopped by the station; They looked at me a bit funny but ran it anyway.

Anyone know if this is legit? Maybe its just me being paranoid but this person only has one post and I'm wondering if its not some sort of anti-gun information site.

Type all your serial numbers in there and see if anything happens in the next 4 years.
