well seeing as I have yet to hear anything back from them almost a week later now, I don't think I am on the list :P
Didn't know you'd have to buy a glock either, figured, I have a Service XD it should suffice. Oh well screw that then.

Yeah the info he was giving me was there are 3 models of glock that are acceptable as "duty weapons" with them. I forget which models at the moment, and as far as being on the "good" or "bad" list...well every job is like that...if your boss hates you, things are going to be unpleasant.

Hello Montanya,
I am an allegheny County Sheriff Reserve in the uniform Division and I have been there since 2002. I also am an Act 120 trained officer and I went to IUP evening program at CMU. MPI, has given you inncorrect information. The training for the ACSD Uniform Reserve program is extensive and begins in January and ends at the end of Jumne and sometimes ends in July, because of Class size. The County of Allegheny pays for a 6 month training Program for reserve deputies in training.....It is not free....It is free for you, if you pass the enterance evauation and Internal Affairs Investigation. Yes, you have to buy your uniform , Gun, duty belt and armour, but at reduced prices. THe same price the City contract is charged. But remember, you do not buy this until you are about to finish the course and YOU have made a decision to enter the Uniform division. Also, there are classified adds for used equipment from Markels, to M&M's in Bridgeville if you want to buy used equipment.... MPI is incorrect about infighting. Yes, there are politics, but show me any organization where Politics does not exist.....Hell, go to any local PD if you want to see politics in action....Try to avoid politics at Robinson PD, or Collier, or Oakdale or any where. Its nearly impossible....Our organization does a great job for the community and we meet with Sheriff Mullen almost every month. He is in support of our details and he authorizes everyone of them..... We have full title 18 arresting authoriy given to us by the Sheriff of allegheny County....Sheriff Mullen.... Contact Lt Col Regan and talk with him....He will give you accurate info...not someone who may be upset or perhaps was terminate from the organization for abusing authority or something....Remember, when we go into uniform, we are Officers and not power brokers. ....We do not have unlimited powers, just like any Municipal officer. We all have to obey our mission. In fact, you are under scrunity when in uniform, just like any officer. You have to do things correctly. You have to speak to the public in respectful tones and you have to have integrety.... The ACSD Deputy program provides a means to learn Law enforcement techniques and to sharpen them, if you are already trained. |

don't make accusations that you don't know about or understand. i know about politics, and the sherrif reserve is the worst organization for politics that i have ever seen. i never said anything about the length of the training so get your head out of your ass and address the correct people. i am saying that i hadx just within 2 months of starting the reserve uniform program i had finished the full time program at IUP. the reserve program was meant to mimick the 120, but was superficial and some of the info was wrong. a couple of the teachers were pretty good guys and i knew a couple of them, but some where totall dipshits.
i saw a number of good people chased out, up to and including board members chased out because they would not kiss the ass of the clique. maybe your new management has changed somethings, but don't tell me what i said was not true because it was. oh, and the next time you make accusations like you did you had better be prepared to answer for them. pat |

An alternative could be to apply at your local University's Safety and Security department. Campus policing is mostly centered around dealing with drunk students, frat fights, pranks, sexual assaults.
I work part time for a local College as a street officer. I don't carry a gun, but I do have OC and handcuffs. I am also certified in OCAT, CIT, and PATH through the college. I only have to buy my boots and a flashlight if I don't want to use a big "mag" style light. It's not "real" police work, but it is still law enforcement, sort of. They call it Community Policing.

You guys are killing me. I'm a volunteer firefighter and $1300 is pretty much base cost for equipping an exterior firefighter...tack on another $2000+ for the airpack if you want to equip an interior firefighter and we haven't even started talking about tools. I do agree, however, that the organization should pay this cost. Fire companies foot this bill and I think that the LEO volunteer org should as well.
(Personally, I like having my own gear, not FD owned stuff...lets me pick the best stuff out, not worrying about anything else other than preference and performance.) |

i provided all of my own gear, the gear the reserve had was a cardboard box of castoff's and all in extra small. at the time i was an anomaly because i didn't have crappy gear, and had a safariland ssIII holster, this was a total surprise to the retention instructor who had never heard of one.
