Default Transferring pistol to father?

Ok I am not a total dummie but I thought I read that if you transfer a firearm from parent to child or child to parent you needent take it to a gun shop and do an official transfer of the firearm, as long as I am aware that he has no criminal record and is legally allowed to own a firearm. My dad lives in a not so nice area and only owned a 22 revolver so I gave him my .45 cal to keep at the house.

Now I know he has applied for a concealed carry permit so before he might start carrying the pistol out and about I was wondering if it is legal for me to have transferred it in that way? I can always still go to the gun store and do it since he is only about an hour from me.

Based on the facts you state, if you and he both live in PA and he's not prohibited from owning a firearm (no criminal history, no restraining orders, not mentally incompetent, etc) then you as his son can transfer a firearm to your father without using an FFL.

Excellent, thanks. Yeah we are both in the Pittsburgh area. He is 63 and never had more than a parking ticket. So as far as him carrying it, if he should have to shoot someone I would not have any responsibility in that action?

Oh, Hell no, you'll get sued by the next of kin for "negligent entrustment". Everybody gets sued after these things, partly because the next of kin of greedy amoral thugs are usually greedy amoral thugs, too.

But the DA won't come after you criminally, because you are in compliance with the Uniform Firearms Act. And the next of kin won't win unless they can prove that you knew that your dad would recklessly or negligently shoot someone; if he had Alzheimers, or a history of violence, you wouldn't want to hand him a gun.

Transfers between parent to child, child to parent, grandparent to grandchild, grandchild to grandparent don't need any paperwork done in PA. However if the one receiving is not allowed, by law, to own or possess a firearm, it cannot be done. Sibling to sibling however, does require a formal, paperwork transfer.

If all is legal, then the giver cannot be held responsible for action of the receiver. But, like Gunlawyer said, the greedy bastards out there will sue everyone if it is used to STOP them from committing a crime. They won't just sue the person who pulled the trigger, they will sue: the person they got the gun from, the sheriff who issued the LTCF, the gun manufacturer, the store where the ammo were bought, and any one else who they think they can get money from. RANT ON: I wish judges had the balls to say to these people "get out of my court, you're wasting my time and the taxpayers money." Or, if they get to court and lose, lay the cost of everything on them AND their lawyers, the lawyers too because you know that the person bringing the suit has no money and is probably going to go to jail. RANT OFF.

Exactly, since it's your dad, just hand it to him along with a bIg grin and say "here dad, love you" and you are good to go.....

I think it would be nice of you to take your father shopping for some good self-defense ammo too.

I would definitley check your local laws, but I don't think you have to have a carry permit to by a firearm, only to conceal or carry it.

Initial response thought - Someone is on drugs and it's not me.

More refined response thought - This is Pennsylvania, so-called local laws are irrelavent since Pennsylvania's laws concerning firearms are state-wide laws with counties, boroughs and townships prohibited from creating their own ordinances.
