Storing ammo?

Where's the best place to store extra ammunition? Garage? Basement? Any special requirements?

Right now I have it in my garage high up on a shelf. In the summer the temp in my garage is much cooler than outdoor temp. In the winter though the temp can drop below 20deg in there.

Recommendations?

The place with the most stable enviroment would be best, with particular attention paid to the moisture level. I don't think heat would be a factor, unless you plan on storing it on top of your furnace. Dry and cool would probably be best.

All my ammo is currently stored in my reloading room, which is a small room on our second floor.

I have a finished basement which I bought a wooden chest from Lancaster wood maker and I put a lock and hasp on it that is what I store all my ammo in. And I keep it in the basement next to my gun safe, I call it my little corner of the house.

Preferably somewhere you don't refinish furniture or do projects that let a lot of oil distillate fumes into the air -- that can ruin primers. Also, elevate the rounds away from the concerete floor.

Heat and humidity are the killers for ammo.

I use mostly .50 cal ammo cans myself...check for good seals. If you can keep them in the house, most of mine are in the garage...I have ammo stored this way, some of it 15 years old and have had no problems.

Some folks for longer term storage will put a dessicant pack in the ammo can to absorb any possible moisture...but I haven't bothered with it myself.

I store mine in military ammo cans, only use ammo can with the rubber seal intact.
I ammo cans are stored in my basement (finished type) and I have never had a problem with the ammo.
I still have some WWII surplus .45 ACP in ammo cans that I wouldn't want to guess at the date of manufacture, but it still functions flawlessly,

I also store mine in mil surp ammo cans with good seals. In cool, dry conditions, ammo has a shelf life in excess of 70 years, some say indefinite.

Go with the ammo cans, that's what they where made for. Dry and stable temp. I have 1939 headstamp German ammo that still works fine.
