Actually, if you are qualified for the cash assistance, you must go to that program.
For you are actually earning the money by going there to be taught other ways on how to get a job. According to Social Services.
I had been with a friend when she had an appointment.
I was right there, I had listened to what her case manager was stating, what she had to do. If she didn't want to partake in that program she COULD NOT get the cash assistance. At least that is how it IS in Monroe County.

Didn't read it in the article, I was told by multiple parents that that's how their kids got the cell phones, and they were the same type that people are getting for the SafeLink.

Well, it might be in Monroe, but of all of the people I've known that have been on cash assistance in Lackawanna, no one has had to do any such program. It would seem that different counties approach it differently. It might be because Monroe doesn't get the traffic in the welfare office that Lackawanna does. I could only imagine how easy they must make it in Philly then.

I have however one thing to say about people that are very fast with their judgment when they see an article like this. You won't get a phone like that when you are on food stamps. They look at your background, and your eligibility is based on what they have in their system about you.
If you receive a phone through "safelink" then you are eligible for that. This means that you have "No Other" means to get in touch with police, ambulances, doctors etc etc.

People that need a phone like that should get one.....FREE........ain't it bad enough already that they have to apply for one? The majority of people that apply for one lost about everything they had to lose in life. How many people had foreclosures?.............they did not ask for that.

Can you please post a link to an article where you read that?
I can understand wanting people to have a FREE cell phone for access to 911 only, but you can pick up any old cell phone (assuming it is compatible with cell towers in your area) and call 911. You don't need a service plan with minutes on it. You just need a phone.

A couple years ago a small cell service reseller (I got my plan through) was asking for people's old phones. He had mentioned something about giving the phones to low income families so they'd have 911 access if needed.

With this program they get more than just 911 access and a free (new) phone.

Yes, sometimes you'll see at places like Walmart and others, a bin for placing your old cell phones in. They give them to people in need for that reason. 911 works without needing service on it.

we were ALL seriously embarrassed to use food stamps to buy food.
I understand what you are saying but sometimes a parent or parents have to do things like that to keep food on the table. I don't think that your mom or stepdad liked it either.
How many people that you know of, that have last their house, job(s), car and friends, are walking around smiling? I think no one does. People have to understand that when you put people in a position, where they see no way out no more, they (sometimes) do crazy things.
Moral support can help these people bounce back stronger and more effectively then when you put them in such a position. Don't get me wrong here......I am against giving cell phones to children that don't need it. But when a family in need, needs a phone then it should be provided for them.

If you really want to talk about a waste of taxpayers money then just take a look at this link.

http://www.parade.com/news/intellige...ers-money.html

For some of us a "Safelink Wireless phone" might be a waste of money but I look at it differently I guess. If it means that only one person can be saved with it, then it is worth it already.
