Actually, it's also a great wakeup call for where your bullets go AFTER they hit (or miss) your target. A large number of rounds leave the range unless you have a really good range.

When I don't go the SGL I go to a range in my city and basicly shoot into a hill thats very large....its like flat land for 100 yards and then starts the incline to 70 foot mountain.

And you know for sure your rounds aren't deflecting skyward how? Like yourself I assume they are impacting dirt and staying there, but tracers sure would confirm this theory.

That's quite a coincidence. I do almost exactly the same thing routinely (same range settup). With tracers. Despite the massive backstop, many bullets leave the range. Most are probably not that dangerous after they get out due to the angles where I shoot. But if a tracer flies over the hill and starts a fire, that's a problem. I only shoot when it's very wet.

yes, they do sometimes leave the range. in this video, my bro in law lets loose with my fifty, the tripod digs in and sends a one over the mountain in the background, (over a mile), the other tracer was found in the middle of a burning ring of fire (10' diameter)about 300 yrds behind the back stop.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVitrVH0fH4

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about a few bullets. I'm talking about 50% skip if not caught by something. In rifle and pistol calibers. And maybe 1 out of 20 or even more leave the range. A whole lot.

Tracers will not hurt your barrel. (if they operate as designed) The tracer doesn't ignite until it is out of the barrel.
Orange tip tracers ignite about 50 yds out of the barrel, Red tip tracers ignight inside the barrel and are very bad for your barrel, there very corrosive.

Even though the M856 designation has never changed, they did light right out of the barrel for many years after they first went into service. Witnessed by me.

Plus, there are zillions of calibers of tracers, and at least 3 people in this thread are not talking exclusively about 5.56.

WW 2 Red tip tracers light inside the barrel, Korean or later Orange tip tracers ignite about 50 yds outside of the barrel. Witnessed by me. Still see a lot of Red tip tracers for sale at gun shows.

I'm not talking about 5.56, I've never shot one of those, they came out after my time so cant comment on them. My experience is with the 30-06 Springfield, .308 NATO, .30 Carbine and the 45 Auto.
