The LEO was wrong approaching the door at 4:00am. He should have phoned first. Don't come on my property uninvited, especially at 4:00am.

Cracking the door is definately a mistake. Thats when they (bad guy) forces in. In my house we have this rule, if you know me you know what door to go to. If the other door is knocked on then rest assured that I am armed. Especially after 9pm.
So, what if the LEO saw the weapon? Its your house, its 4am and someones at the door. What would anybody this day and age think? My first reaction would be to give the phone to my wife grab my XD and recon the front from around the side. Once I had confirmation this is not a BG then and only then would I secure my weapon (be it on my hip or in my pocket) and approach the front. Too many home invasions and this is NOT a reasonable time to be knocking on ones door! Leo's can get your phone number from what we used to call a criscros, thats where they match a phone number to an address. Then the LEO making contact would call you first. And this was done back in the 80's.
