Here is what I have I learned. It is cheaper for me to ship through my FFL. He can use the USPS, a private party can't. In order to send a handgun by UPS, it is required by UPS regulation to go overnight. That costs $50+.
If the gun transfer fails on the buyers end, the FFL can not ship back to you. It will have to go to your FFL. If it came from your FFL, the receiving FFL can just send it back.
A lot of FFL holders will not accept a shipment directly from you. Mine won't.
As far as knowing what you have to do, read the tutorials on the Gunbroker website.

The misinformation in this thread is killing me. You can ship a long arm via the USPS. Jesus Christ the regulations are pretty simple and have been posted multiple times.
As for what happens if the transfer fails, who cares? You ship the gun only when the funds clear and then it's the buyers problem. I wouldn't refund a gunbroker purchase for failure to pass a check. The buyer can sell the gun without ever taking possession of it. If he can't pass the check, let him list it for sale.
If the buyers chosen FFL won't accept a shipment, they need to find a different FFL, or wait longer for me to find an FFL willing to do it, and pay the extra fee.
