Went to pay off my first pistol ( a 1985 pre B CZ 75), filled out the paper work, dude makes call, askes me if I am a Junior, I say " used to be, senior died I dropped the Jr." he hangs up the phone and said "you have been put on the research list I will call you in 3 or 4 days".
WTF? Will it take 4 days for some overpaid lasy ass to punch some damn keys on a computer somewhere??? Isnt it legal to just drop a Jr. or IIIrd designation when the senior passes on? NOT EFFING HAPPY! |

Hope this helps clear things up.
Research Response Certain situations will prevent a background check from being approved or denied at the time of the initial call. Possible circumstances which may result in a transaction being delayed for research include: Potentially prohibiting records that require additional information or clarification, poor response time on a particular database, or a database that is temporarily out of service. If this condition occurs, the FFL calling the PICS will be informed that the background check cannot be completed at this time and that more research must be done before a final determination can be made. The FFL should then inform the customer of the situation. Under research status, the firearm dealer cannot let the prospective purchaser or transferee take possession of any firearm. It should be noted that every effort is made to complete research on an individual as soon as possible. Immediately upon completion of the research, the operator is required to call the dealer to give the final decision. It may take as long as 15 days for an operator to obtain the information needed to provide a final decision. A Pennsylvania firearm dealer cannot transfer a firearm to a non-licensee until the receive an approval number from a PICS representative. Researched Approvals As soon as an operator determines that an individual placed in research may be approved they will contact the dealer. Once an approval number is given to a dealer it is only good until the close of business on the day it is given. In most case, the customer is no longer in the store so the dealer is given the option to call back for the approval number after he has contacted the customer. Under these circumstances, the approval number will be held a maximum of one week. Therefore, if a dealer is called Monday with an approval, the number will be held until midnight the following Monday. If the dealer is unable to contact the customer within this time frame, a new background check must be initiated. So, you can see that it could be a number of things that put you into "research".

If you are legally a JR you need to continue that designation, otherwise it will cause a problem. They will think that you are trying to buy under the non junior, senior, or dads name. |

I would venture to guess that the apparent confusion as to who exactly you are (with regards to Junior, Senior, Inigo Montoya, and what have you...) would be enough to throw your file into the research pile, if only to err on the side of caution.
Either that or possibly your father was prohibited, but I'm guessing it's the former. If it were me, and this is just my two cents, when the man asked me if I was Junior... I would simply have said 'Yes.' |

![]() With the legal issue stuff, you have to go with what's on your birth certificate. If it says Junior, then you use the Jr on any legal paper. Even if using Jr annoys the hell out of you, it's much better to be annoyed than to have something stupid like that cause a background check to come back as no good.

Thanks for the replies!
I guess I shouldn't have dropped the Jr. So... Can I count on this happening EVERY time I go to buy a firearm? Wonder if I can put Jr. back on my PA drivers License? Talk about a Joy Kill, I was ready to pet the CZ all day yesterday. :-( |

Day 4, still no call back from pics, dealer says he has had some take as long as 10 days.
Wife called a different dealer and they said pics has 14 days to make a decision. The wait is killing me, my brother just got his laser sight on his sigma, we were gonna shoot all weekend. I looked at penndots website and found a corrections form, do you think I should add the Jr. back on, or will that just screw everthing up even more? One other thing is bugging me, should I ask the dealer to add the Jr. to the paper work for the gun? |
