No, I've not tried. I'm not arguing that it wasn't the right thing to do - I think it's ridiculous that you wouldn't be allowed to put a suffering animal out of its misery. Just saying, be cautious in regards to what is "on the books."

Maybe it was the PGC officer at the safety course I just took in May, he hit this issue pretty hard, saying how you cannot do it and HE/PGC is the authority when it comes to animals in the region, and not PSP.

The laser grips are on at 5 ft.
Funny you should mention that tonightI was wondering if I could do that if I either hit a deer or found a hit one like you did. What made me think of this was I was out driving around and saw 6 deer tonight. Got me thinking, would the LEOs let me euthanize one or would it be a big headache cruelty to animals, killing a deer during bow season with a firearm, discharge of a weapon in a safety zone and it goes on the list of charges they could apply. I'm glad to hear they said go ahead! It would have been nice to take the carcass home to test out some hollow points Where did you hit him? back of the head? Nice job, clean kill and out of suffering!

We now have a WCO [WCO,R.W.J] on this board I'm sure he will chime in.

From my time at HuntingPA.com I can say that he would say you [and the PSP] were wrong. If a WCO or deputy drove up while you were there you would have been charged under title 34.

Acording to the PGC you are never authorized to 'do the right thing' when it comes to an injured deer. They want you to contact the PGC and they will come and do it unless it expired in the meantime.

Alot of the guys at HuntingPA.com don't agree with this way of thinking either, but that is what the law says...

Yeah...gonna say if the police say it's cool - You're covered.

On another note. If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it how would anyone know I shot the deer?

It's probably a good idea, in future, to get contact info for the PSP officer that gave you the "go ahead", in case you need him to talk to the PGC WCO that's threatening action against you.

Used to be, a man was always allowed to do the right thing. Hard to know, any more, what free men are free to do!

So how did this ridiculous rule that only furthers the cruelty of an animal suffering pointlessly come to be and what efforts are being made to reverse it ? Is it a concern about poachers claiming " euthanasia " of a deer ? Or a weapon being discharged in a residential area ? Or ?????? I mean, if those are the issue's they could certainly be addressed on a case by case basis. Maybe this is one of those rare issues were the animal rights groups ( cruelty ) and pro gunners could team up for something positive for both sides. It just seems so senseless. I once watched a friend nail a deer when about 12 of us were out on our bikes. Fortunately it was a relatively low speed encounter and the only things hurt were his bike and the deer. Now since this occured on a road in East BumbleFuck NJ at about 1 AM and the police were no where to be found, I put the deer out of its misery from obviously fatal injuries by slitting its throat with my carry knife. There was no way we could have just ridden away and let the thing suffer for hours on the shoulder of the road.

Good for you Jim. I don't know who came up with the rule that an injured deer cannot be dispatched by anyone but PGC, but to them I say you cold hearted Nincompoop.

Let the animals suffer and you too shall suffer...gee I hope this curse works.

Damn that button, it always seems to be broke.
