Indeed. When my place was broken into it was by a white Vietnam vet & ex firefighter that I had known for years. I wouldn't say that a white guy, a Vet or a Firefighter robbed me however as those associations had nothing to do with the crime. I WOULD say that a crackhead robbed me, however, because that fact did have to do with the crime.

Using the same logic, pointing out these kids race... well, you see where I'm going. Not trying to insinuate anything about OPs intentions, just a pet peeve like I said.

Yea, I understand. I wasn't trying to be racist (which is sometimes near impossible not to be in our politically correct society).

I wasn't saying that they broke into our house because of the color of their skin, it's more to do with their economic status which can be attributed to a variety of factors.

I do think though that we were targeted because we were white. We are the only white people on this block, so I think they may have been under the impression that because we're white, we have expensive things.

Again, this has to do with the less than nice living conditions of the people around here, not their skin color.

If you are having the security bars replaced, I recommend coating them with a thin layer of black silicone and dipping them in broken glass. Every couple of weeks, I would also suggest throwing a good coating of body glitter on them. Then the next time all you need to tell the cops is to look for the kids with the cut up hands and body glitter all over themselves. Body glitter is a sum'bitch to get off of yourself....

If being a Vietnam vet or an exfirefighter were distinguishing features, then you are well within proper etiquette to disclose that information. They are not, so there is no point (that is the logic).

I don't see why distinguishing features are really relevant when we're talking about the title of the thread. By the same logic, being a junkie isn't necessarily a distinguishing feature yet that is how I said I'd describe the perp in my case. To me, the thread title struck me as a 'why' rather than 'who' committed a crime... obviously not OPs intent (I assumed at the time and confirmed later), and why I was polite in pointing it out.

I mean, I suppose I could say an "older white male" robbed me but hell, that describes a good 80% of this forum and doesn't really help paint a picture of what occurred. Saying it was kids, as OP did, gave me a better idea of what occurred. Pointing out that they're black... well, OP made his case and had a good point. Given the chance to go back and do it over though, I'd still have pointed it out. Added to the discussion in a positive way IMHO.

To get this tread back on track, as suggested before invest in a dog. Most people will stay clear of homes where they hear a dog. But you want one that has teeth to his/her bark. When I used to breed Akitas I personally had 7 and many homes in my area were burglarized, just not mine.

OK, I find this incredible.

I am sure when the cops asked for a descriptions, and you were to answer 4 kids age about 13, they would immediately ask, "white or black"?

But this proves they were planning the break in. I'm sure they knew what they wanted. I'd bet they were watching you through that window. Renters insurance would help for sure. I am also glad you didn't have to use your weapon.

It seems to me the LEO's sensed they were up against someone who knew their rights, and backed off. Good job!!
