I just picked up a couple boxes of federal hollow point ammo for carry purposes, and I'm wondering if I should run some of it through my carry gun or not. It's obviously way more expensive than the WWB I usually shoot, so I'm hesitant to waste it at the range. But I don't want to find out at a bad time that my new expensive ammo doesn't feed well. How much carry ammo do you guys put through your guns?

It is always a good idea to shoot the ammo that you are going to carry. I'm not saying to use the SD ammo at the range all the time, but you want to know how it shoots in your weapons.

well, obviously the more you can put through it the better.....but I would say at minimum 2 or 3 full mags.

you def. want to shoot atleast a few mags, if not more you want to get a feel for how its going to shoot and make sure your gun likes it ect ect...

I recommend at least 100 rounds of defensive ammo through your gun. It's not a waste of money to know the load you trust your life to functions properly in your gun.

Buy an extra box to shoot first, then every month, two tops, shoot the ammo you carry and replace it.
You're right... it is expensive, but well worth shooting some for the confidence. I just switched to the "Powerball" round in my XD40SC. I like the teflon ball to help ensure a smooth feed. I wish I was wealthy enough to target shoot with it but I usually just use WWB.

Minimum of 100 rounds with no failures. Maybe one or two at the most. Shoot a mag once in a while to reinforce your confidence and to rotate your ammo. If it's a new gun I would put around 3-500 fmj through it first to iron out any minor issues, break the gun in a bit, decide what weight bullet you want etc. Then plunge into the expense of defense ammo.

If you get any failures in that 100 rounds it better be shooter induced.
