I'm going to partially disagree here and I sent John an email about this when I first read this. I agree with everything EXCEPT the "no, I don't understand my rights" part.

We want the officer to stop talking to us, right? So, by saying that you don't understand your rights, then he can keep trying to explain them to you. Gee - I want him/her to leave me alone, not keep talking to me.

Also, if you are too dense to understand your rights (especially with prior training), then you are possibly too dense to understand when you may or may not employ lethal force.

Look at it from a jury's standpoint. First, the defendant stated repeatedly that he didn't understand his rights about self incrimination. Oh, but miraculously, he did understand that a man with an impact weapon who was 20 feet away did, in fact, constitute an immediate lethal threat. Uhhh, yeah.
