570MT.....thank you for the good words.
Please take the following in an informative light....I am not bashing or scolding you.....I am just providing some insight. As Norm mentioned...most shops charge for the CC....including us.... Please do not be too hard on us for that......because...... In reality we are saving you money...... If shops were to inflate the prices for credit, then the shop makes out every time you pay cash or debit.... you are paying too much. On on 500, that is $15 back in your pocket for ammo, lunch, the movies, whatever I know it is odd to pay the CC fee b/c every other type of business/industry does not charge it......food, clothes, service, tools, hardware, electronics, et cetera .....have that expense already calculated in the price.....if you pay cash they are ahead. The overall strange part is....the gun business has the least amount of profit relative to other industries, but requires a high level of customer service, product knowledge, operational responsibility, paperwork, and time...... So with most shops needing/trying to be as competitive as possible. The 3% factored in would make their prices appear to be higher than the shops who charge the fee separately..... Lets take 2 shops.....the first has the CC fee factored in and the second has a lower price and charges a CC fee. The knee jerk reaction initially is to go with the cheaper price.......In this scenario, the shop with the CC factored in is the bad guy in the beginning because of the higher price and the shop with the lower price is the bad guy in the end because they have a 3% cc charge........but at end of the day, numbers work out the same if you are paying with a CC. If you are paying cash or debit....the shops who charge the CC fee separately are the good guys because they are saving you money. The the reality is, if you are a shop owner you can offer the best price by not factoring in the CC %, then you as the customer can either reap the savings with cash/debit or use a CC by paying the 3%. I would rather have the option.....in the end you are paying less. I hope this changes your mind about the shops that charge for CC. Last edited by AdvancedArms; August 30th, 2009 at 01:35 PM. |

I've got to say... After many visits and several purchases at Advanced Arms, Chris and his crew have been the best I've encountered. I bought a Ruger LCP with a bunch of accessories last week, a Stag Arms AR-15 previously, and a few smaller purchases in the last few months. I've sent a few buyers his way and we have all left very happy.
A great place to shop! |

I really don't want to get into a tit for tat about CC charges.... its not really something that either of us would find a good use of our time.
What can I say, I don't like it... Easy solution though, I can just use cash.

You got Piestracks in Alden, Advacced in Pittston, and J&S in east side Wilkes-Barre. All nice places. The people there are all into guns. Gun shops are a lot better than Wall-Mart any day.If I missed any local real gun shops put your two cents in, I myself would like to know.

A lot of shops are violating their terms of service agreement as a merchant. |

No, the prices they quote reflect a 3% cash discount that cannot be earn on credit card purchases. The fact of the matter is you have THREE options..... 1. Pay 3, 4, 5% more on ALL payment methods - cash, debit, and credit card In this scenario, the SHOP makes out 2. Get the best price by paying cash or debit.... only pay the 3% if you decide to use a credit. In this scenario, the Customer gets the best deal. 3. The shop charges it's normal 10% markup, loses 3% on the credit cards, layoff employees, reduces inventory, cut back service, and finally decide a 7% doesn't cut it and closes their shop to go work for the ABC company. I haven't seen people haggle prices at Lowes or a Restaurant. Last edited by AdvancedArms; October 6th, 2009 at 06:59 PM. |

There is a fourth option you missed and that would be simply Not to accept credit card payments at all.
But then maybe you would lose a portion of your client base. Semantics not withstanding, if you have one price on a piece of merchandise and the client takes that to the register and wants to pay by credit card, if he has to pay MORE than the listed price because of the credit card transaction THAT is in violation of the merchant's terms of service agreement. 570MT had it correct when he stated "...they should just mark the gun up that percentage..." and then, at the back end, offer a cash discount. That policy is not a violation. Accepting credit cards is a convenience for both the customer and the business operator. But, as a business operator, the fees associated with accepting credit cards are simply the cost of doing business. |
