Last Saturday Monica and I were in the Lebanon Wal Mart doing our regular grocery shopping. For those who don't know, we shop there regularly and never have a problem. So do several other Ocers. We were there about an hour or more and were headed for the checkout when an assistant manager approached, introduced himself, and explained that someone had complained about my gun, and asked me to put it in my car. I told him we were about to leave anyway, and asked if I could just check out and go. He said that would be fine.
I informed him of the legality of OC, gave him a flier, and pointed out that this has already been hashed out with corporate and the local manager, and he was just going to get corrected. He said he understood, but for right now he wanted the gun gone.We checked out and left. As we were leaving the greeter remarked sarcasticly to someone else "I'm sure they need that in Wal Mart." I was pissed but Monica dragged me out and wouldn't let me go back in. So I began the process of trying to get in contact with the manager, which happened today. According to Denise Biggs (I hope I spelled her name correctly), the manager, OC is just dandy in Wal Mart, the assistant manager was new and unfamiliar with the policy, and has been corrected. She also stated that if a customer or 'someone' complains they may ask us to put it in the car, but we can refuse as it is not against their policy. If we refuse we should not be asked to leave.

Somehow I doubt nobody has ever been a victim of a violent crime in a Walmart.

Very cool that you followed through on this. One point though: when speaking with these managers after the fact, make sure they are keenly aware that if the problem individuals aren't corrected, and you're inconvenienced again in the future, that you'll be taking any and all business elsewhere, even if it means more expense to you. If the situation is extreme enough, it's even worthwhile IMHO to allude to a lawsuit.
Maybe I'm a pessimist, but I don't exactly believe that these employees are really being educated on anything. I mean, they couldn't leave an employee ignorant of sexual harassment laws and policy, because that could open them up to a suit that could result in lots of lost dollars. So, why is ignorance of firearms laws and policy OK? I think it's more a case of planned ignorance; they're hoping most people will just comply with the ignorant employee, and when someone objects and complains, they just throw out the standard "we'll make sure to educate the employee on policy" line. In the end, they're a business. They only care about customers because customers SPEND MONEY, or threaten to TAKE MONEY from them. If you make them think you'll roll, put the gun in the car, and still keep shopping, eventually they won't care about our incidents with uneducated employees. However, if we take our business elsewhere, or start suing them over the issue, and they stand to lose large sums of money, then all of a sudden every employee is trained before they're even allowed out on the floor with a blue vest. That's exactly why many companies train for sexual harassment today, something that wasn't even thought of 30 years ago: because people started suing the crap out of businesses over it.
