It would certainly be most handy in any situation where needed. If you happened to be shot while walking down the street, I'm sure your assessment of it's handiness would be changed. I don't carry any first aid kit not because it wouldn't be handy, but because of the cost/benefit analysis. I like to only have the minimum with me so keys, money and gun are usually what I have on me and not much else.

But on the serious side, I carry a ladies sanitary pad in my manpurse for just such an occasion. I mean, they are designed to absorb blood, right? More multipurpose than QC, as I can use it to clean up other messes in a pinch, and just grab a fresh one later. And for anyone who wants to crack a joke about me carrying a maxi pad, thats fine, your macho-ness can have fun bleeding out on the sidewalk.

Sorry but I'm sitting here laughing because I'm following you blood trail. What the hell were you doing??? You were all over that kitchen before you got the bleeding under control! I'm laughing with you brother 'cause I did the same thing 2 weeks ago. I cut a vein and the tendon in my thumb only difference is I bled outside all over the deck! You could see my every move too!

Is quick clot really appropriate for a gunshot? I can see using it for a laceration but a gunshot that obviously is deep will continue to bleed internally, I think the quick clot will just stop the blood from hitting the floor and not necessarily stop the blood from continuing to pool in your thoracic cavity (if thats where you got hit???) maybe it will work for a hit to the extremities but I think thats about it.
I learned from a hunter safety class that in the event of a punctured lung (from falling on a broadhead or a gunshot that you should immediately seal the penetration to keep extenal air from collapsing the lung,. this can be done by placing plastic over the wound and "sealing it off" use a rubber glove, celophane from a pack of cigarrettes, or stick your finger in the hole-anything to keep your diaphram form depressurizing and collapsing a lung.

For chest cavity wounds (pneumothorax), and the pros can correct me on this, but I was taught to apply a sealant over the wound, and fasten down 3 corners of it, leaving a 'flap' loose. The idea is to let air out, expelling positive pressure, while holding negative pressure inside, allowing the diaphragm to inflate the lungs. In a pinch, cellophane will work, basically anything non-porous.
