We homeschooled our kids and the US History books available were great.

How in depth do you want to get? Some of my favorites are:

Founding Brothers

and

1776

Plus there are numerous biographies that are outstanding.

Although its focus is not exclusively on early America (he does spend several chapters on this subject, IIRC,) I recommend supplementing your main text with James Loewen, Lies My Teacher Told Me.

Another good history book is The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History.

+1 on 1776. Great book. Also check out the John Adams Bio. Both will give you a feel of the time.
