Arizona Sheriff Won't Cooperate With DOJ

PHOENIX --

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office will not cooperate with the U.S. Department of Justice in an ongoing investigation into whether the office uses racial profiling, Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced in a news conference Tuesday.

Arpaio said he's halting all interviews between his staff and DOJ investigators.

The sheriff claims the DOJ is investigating his office for political reasons, not because of racial profiling; according to Arpaio, the Democrats in Washington don't agree with section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows local law enforcement agencies to assist with illegal immigration enforcement efforts.

"It only took them 60 days to come after me," Arpaio said. "Sixty days. It usually takes about two years to open up a letter in the Justice Department."

The DOJ informed the sheriff's office in March that it was investigating. Since then, Arpaio said the agency has yet to cite any specific examples of racial profiling.

"The new attorney general has said that his top priority is to go after racial profiling," he said. "Don't pick on me to show you're doing something. If you're going to do it, pick on someone that's guilty -- there's a big difference here."

Arpaio said he'll fight the investigation, even if it means suing the federal government.

As far as I'm concerned his jail system is how all jail systems around the country should be. No internet, no TV, no exercise equipment, you should be working to repay your debt to society for the lower offenses and be locked up for the more serious offenses. There's no reason for prison to be this place where you go to make more connections with the criminal underworld. Lock them up and serve them lunch in their cells.

Beyond that since quite a few of the illegal aliens in this country are of Mexican or Hispanic descent your damn right its racial profiling because most of the illegals are of certain race. Durr... Its all stirring the pot on both sides.

I don't blame Sheriff Joe in the slightest. DOJ not only wants to stand him against a wall and shoot him, they expect him to load the rifles for them. (figuratively speaking of course)

Even though I disagree with many of his own beliefs.. I'll admit, he keeps inner prison violence at a minimum.

If you do a crime, you do your time and be treated fairly, humanly, but it's still prison.. You shouldn't have to worry about being shived in the back by a gangbanger or being killed for some other stupid shit..

Making them work hard, and having no ammenities is perfectly within what prison should be. No more. No less.

Thats what I thought when I read the OP article. Then I looked around for some more info and, even though he is correct on this issue, the man appears to me to be a pompous douche. We can't support "Jack-Booted Thuggery" only when it coincides with our beliefs. He is clearly a legend in his own mind and abusing the shit out of his power.
