Default My vacation to Ohio.

I used to post a lot here, then work just started snowballing HARD and we got really backed up. I prioritized and picked work and family as priorities over internet groups I was a part of (and rightly so in my mind).

I finally have a chance to take a week off and the wife and I planned a vacation to cedar point, staying in one of the cedar point official hotels. We get there first night and as expected the park is expensive, but like I said - totally expected that. We locked our stuff up in the car as we got back very late and I had to carry my daughter in, and my wife is 35 weeks pregnant...we couldnt carry much and it was about midnight.

Next morning I come to find that everything we left in the car was stolen - they slim jimmed the door or picked the lock. I planned on going to Camp Perry to shoot some, so I had my unloaded pistol in the car (which was guaranteed locked) - they stole my gun, my camera with the bag and the cards etc, my daughter's nintendo DS and my dad's GPS which he let us borrow in case we needed to find a hospital quick in case my wife went into labor. Insurance says they're not covering any of it. We go to the park and try to make the best of it.

Next day we go to an indoor water park which was nice. That night my wife and I asked my inlaws if they'd take my daughter for the night so we could see transformers at 8. We buy the tickets, drinks, popcorn and all that and then they tell us we cant sit together...one will sit in one corner and the other in another. SO I sais screw that and asked for a refund....her paretns said to catch the later one...so we did but had to show up an hour early just to get in line to get good seats. Get to the hotel @ 1am, I park right in front of the hotel under a light and between two cameras to be safe (though nothing is left to steal). I wake up to slashed tires and dents in my door. A few hundred dollars in tires later and we're back in PA.

Im still not sure how to fight the insurance thing, we don't have renters or homeowners since we just moved out of her parents place and metlife is saying they would have only covered some luggage theft.
Im hoping they cover the tires/dent regardless of the deductable. I would have been better off with the extra stress at work.

(edit: police reports were filed, no laws were broken by me even to ohio standards).

Just thought I'd vent. I have to replace the DS and the Camera and my dad's GPS before I think about getting a replacement carry pistol. Unfortunately it was my only one....they even took both of my holsters.
I might have to go cheap Mak or something...will have to start pinching pennies.

WOW, that REALLY sucks!

having grown up in NE Ohio (Akron) and having visited every spot you mentioned at least once (and never having a problem like you mentioned) I really wonder how bad 'my homeland' has gotten. We are going back in August for a family reunion and I'm hoping to NOT experience what you did.

Sorry for your troubles, NE Ohio used to be such a great place. I have fond memories of it growing up ... it's too damn bad a few lowlifes have ruined that too.

Why didn't you have the hotel lock your pistol in the safe?
Most of the hotels I stay at in Ohio will do that even if there is a no weapons sign on the door. Usually I just ask someone at the desk.

First vacation I ever took with a weapon, signs on doors say explicitly not to bring any weapon into the building whatsoever. I understand that like PA they may have no legal weight but I didn't want to test that at all.

That's still not the point though...they still broke into my car.

In Ohio signs have a great deal of weight. Not like Pa.

If your going to carry in Ohio, know the law. As Ed pointed out - signage in Ohio carries TONS of legal weight... You'll most likely be arrested on the spot if you ignore them. To carry in Ohio you have to have a reciprocal license (i.e. Utah, Florida - those two come to mind - there are others). Its also a good idea to check the states website for the current laws before you find out you made a bad mistake... several sites have links to them (http://www.handgunlaw.us/ is one good resource).

I agree with DC - I too grew up near Akron and it was a blast... its changed though over the years. I get back there a couple times a year and its NOT what I remember. Sorry to hear about your losses - your auto policy probably does have a limit on what it will cover as far as contents are concerned - you might be SOL on that front.

Hang onto that police report for life however - you never know where your gun might turn up and you dont want to have to answer a legal battle should something happen involving it.

As stated earlier, signs such as these do carry statutory weight in Ohio.
Ohio Revised Code § 2923.126. Duties of licensed individual.
(C)
(3)
(a) Except as provided in division (C)(3)(b) of this section, the owner or person in control of private land or premises, and a private person or entity leasing land or premises owned by the state, the United States, or a political subdivision of the state or the United States, may post a sign in a conspicuous location on that land or on those premises prohibiting persons from carrying firearms or concealed firearms on or onto that land or those premises. Except as otherwise provided in this division, a person who knowingly violates a posted prohibition of that nature is guilty of criminal trespass in violation of division (A)(4) of section 2911.21 of the Revised Code and is guilty of a misdemeanor of the fourth degree. If a person knowingly violates a posted prohibition of that nature and the posted land or premises primarily was a parking lot or other parking facility, the person is not guilty of criminal trespass in violation of division (A)(4) of section 2911.21 of the Revised Code and instead is subject only to a civil cause of action for trespass based on the violation.
(b) A landlord may not prohibit or restrict a tenant who is a licensee and who on or after the effective date of this amendment enters into a rental agreement with the landlord for the use of residential premises, and the tenant’s guest while the tenant is present, from lawfully carrying or possessing a handgun on those residential premises.
(c) As used in division (C)(3) of this section:
(i) “Residential premises” has the same meaning as in section 5321.01 of the Revised Code, except “residential premises” does not include a dwelling unit that is owned or operated by a college or university.
(ii) “Landlord,” “tenant,” and “rental agreement” have the same meanings as in section 5321.01 of the Revised Code.
