Angry Eye protection, Ear Protection... is that enough?

Is eye protection and ear protection sufficient?

Usually, but today it wasn't. Look what almost ruined an afternoon of shooting.

We use cardboard for our target backers. Many of the backers were damp and weak so I chose one from the bottom. BIG MISTAKE! This bugger bit the heck out of me!

Learn from my mistake. I hope that's not what I'm here for, but you can learn from it. This critter likes dark and damp locations. They can be found under rocks and all around but this one was between cardboard and was mean'er than all heck. It drew blood on my finger right at the knuckle. What a sumbitch!

I'm PRETTY SURE its a Callobius bennetti and I have nothing to worry about but some soreness. If I die and post again in a few days notify the ZRT.

Steve,
You had my wife very concerned. (not that I wasn't concerned, but a guy's concern goes away if you don't stop breathing or have convultions in the first couple minutes )
On the way home, she said she was worried we'd have to call an ambulance for you & we had weak-nadda for cell signal out there. She was glad the first aid kit came in handy... that's only the second time we've needed it for anything. Don't you feel (.38) special now?

Fun range trip tonight... thanks for the invite (did you want to shoot with me or be nursed by my wife though... Hmmmmmm)
Can't wait to do it again soon, but gotta wait for the spiders to get hungry again LOL. Next time we'll just amputate & if it's your trigger finger, well, shit happens...I guess I'll have to give that 1911 & the Sig a good home

Are you going to send me a copy / link to the video we shot?

Nah , then he'll just have to use the infamous point shooting technique using his middle finger that tool was pushing in the other thread a couple weeks ago . Of course being forced to such a scenario will result in revealing the " fatal flaw " of the 1911 , in which case I'll be happy to put my life on the line and give it a good home !

Just be glad that wasn't a brown recluse. My mom was bit by one when she was a little girl. It had found a home in her riding boots (she showed horses) and bit her on the shin when she put it on. Damn near lost her leg.

On the plus side, scorpion stings are like mosquito bites to her now. That recluse venom was nasty enough to make pretty much everything else pointless.

I was so close to stuffing that spider down my barrel and sending him against the steel plates at 25 yards.... but I knew I needed to take him home to identify him.

That "insect relief" from your first-aid kit works well because it didn't hurt at all until I was almost home.

There's a phone in the clubhouse just in case there's an emergency or you want to order food. My cell works there but luckily we didn't need any assistance.

No real red marks or swelling but that knuckle sure hurts deep in there.

The common name is a "Hackled Mesh Weaver"

I can understand the spider bite, but ummmm why is you mom getting stung by scorpions?

Good point. Actually the first thing I did was look up the brown recluse to make sure IT WASNT THAT. Then I started digging around until I found it.

It is amazing how the body can learn from the venom and become tolerant of future stings. I saw pictures of what the brown recluse can do and that's some nasty nasty nasty stuff. I hope she didn't have problems with it.

Seems like many spider bites hurt hours later and not immediately. I think this is due to their size and our size and the time it takes for a small amount of venom to run through our system.

I felt awful that this happened before we even started to shoot. We planned to meet up and everyone was looking forward to it. I told 87th to just start shooting and if I didn't see purple unicorns dancing around in about 10 minutes I would join them.

So far so good and I don't have any sudden urges to climb walls or hide in dark damp places.

They tend to show up randomly in AZ. Usually on bathroom floors or in your shoes.

Our elementary school prinicpal was out for a while because a bark scorpion decided to spar with his big toe. They both lost
